My name is Zachary Buck and this is my second time having to go through English 100. In my first semester I didn't take the course seriously and received a NC. I have since grown and am more dedicated to my school work. I believe I can write very well if I just put enough time and thought into what I'm doing. I'm very excited to finally get a chance to be in English 101 so I will be able to show what I'm capable of. So please allow me to show an English 101 teacher what I can do. The first assigned essay was "The Sanctuary of School" by Lynda Barry. On this essay I had a hard time relating to Barry because I never viewed school as a safe haven. I've always dreaded going to school but I understood what she felt because I put myself in her shoes. If I had a bad home life I would want to go to school as bad as she did. The final draft is a lot more grammatically correct and better written. The final draft's strengths are that it has quotes from the author and my own personal examples. The only weakness I see in the final draft is that it could be more specific. My favorite essay, "A Handful of Tips Helps Balance on Minimum Wage's Tightrope" by Claudia Smith Brinson was the second essay assigned. I really didn't have any problems with this essay because I understood it and the subject was something that I could really relate to. The final draft is more grammatically correct and has more specific examples. The strengths of my final draft are that it has good personal examples and a fine understanding of the author's main idea. The weakness of my final draft is that it could have been longer, but I like cutting straight to the point rather than dancing around it. The final essay was "Every Choice Has Its Consequences-Or at Least It Should", by Cindi Scoppe. I had problems comprehending some of her ideas but after reading back over the essay I was able to understand it better. The final draft is overall a better essay

The article titled “Brazil Seen Beating US in Soybean Trade as China Buys” discusses the rising production of soybeans in Brazil. The US is currently the largest grower of the product and therefore holds a comparative advantage in trade amongst nations. Rising supply from Brazil will create competition for the business of the largest demand which is held in China. “Production in Brazil climbed 53 percent in the past decade, compared with 7 percent in the US” (Javier, Chanjaroean, 2012). In 2012-2013, Brazil is said to produce 81 million tons of soybean as compared to 77.84 million tons in the US which portrays Brazil’s comparative advantage (Javier, Chanjaroean, 2012). China has imported 59.2 tons of soybean in the year ended September 30th of which, 45 percent were produced in Brazil and 39 percent were from the US. China utilizes soybeans to create meal for livestock and fish, and to produce cooking oil. It is clear that the US is losing its competitive edge on the production and distribution of soybeans mainly because it no longer possesses the comparative advantage in production. This analysis will discuss what enables a country to rise above its competition via the creation of comparative advantage in trade.…

The essay I choose to write about was Maya Angelou’s “Sister Flowers”. I believe that the purpose of this essay was to describe an important part of this person’s life that helped them to become a better writer/poet/reader and also describe what I think to be this persons mentor. This essay talks about how Mrs. Bertha Flowers decides to take Marguerite Henderson home with her to give her good books to read and to read her an excerpt form a book. I think it is a very well written and extremely descriptive essay, it makes you feel like you are there with them listening to the pages turning and almost taste the tea cookie or smell the vanilla from Mrs. Flower’s home.…

The second essay, focused on the evaluations of evaluations, was very amusing. The author was keeping his mood light and happy. Throughout the essay, it was clear their intention. The criteria and methodology seemed fitting for the evaluation. Their choice of ideas to evaluate were evidently important to the author, which is important. Some of the ideas may seem a bit odd, but to me they give the readers more insight into who the author is. The author’s reasoning behind his choice is clear and easy to understand. The ironic idea for the essay and the way the author writes…

Analyzing before this class was difficult for me to do and after seeing how important it is or necessary it is to have to make a stronger argument made me want to improve. After doing hours of research for every essay we had this semester made me comprehend why the prompt were questions I should have made for myself. How although many things in life can be subjective it does not affect the relevancy. One of my favorite things we did for this class was to read The Handmaid’s Tale, although many would disagree with me, it made me want to change my opinion on certain things. How frightening it must be ever live in a society like the one in the novel…

Some changes that I have made to this document are for example, strengthening the rhetorical appeals, cutting out sentences that were not useful, and also making the essay more direct. This shows my development as a conscious writer because I was able to take comments that I received and put them into action. Not only that, I was able to read over my essay and catch mistakes that I did not see when I first submitted this assignment in the beginning of the semester. In these final revisions I thought I was good at being able to better specify certain problems to make my argument more understandable. Also I thought I was efficiently able to re-read the essay and find sentences that did not have to be in the essay because they were either repeater,…

During my English comp summer session class, I was instructed to read several essays and give my feedback on them. In my opinion, the last three writings were probably the most memorable and important. “Hurricane Katrina”, a story on the immediate and after affects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, was first of these three stories. It focused on real life experiences of people who lived through it, victims giving their heartrending testimonies. “It’s Not Just A Bike”, is about Lacey Taylor and her tireless pursuit in her cause to help bring to a halt thieves stealing bikes from off her school campus. Another story I read was “Free The Children”. It gave constructive criticism to parents who would not generally let their children enjoy their summers out of school. These three compositions were the most significant and interesting to read.…

For this assignment, I chose the first essay that we complete in the class. I chose the essay, because I felt that out of all the assignments, from this semester, this was my weakest. I could not personally take a stand on the subject, I felt like I was writing the same thing everyone else was writing. Although, paper two was a little more difficult I learned to deal with the differences. I still think that my paper two can be improved by making more detailed arguments. I am so used to having a different paper with argument in to rather than an informative essay. My weakness for this essay would be lack of description. I was told my description for my topic of paper two would be long, however, mine was short because it was to the point. Although paper two was not my favorite paper, it did help me learn to write in a different style compared to argument based…

    all about me

The prompt presented within the first week of the new semester was to compose an essay about myself. The first thing that came to mind was the simple fact I was going to fail. I had to ask several questions before even completely understanding the requirements. We had to evaluate who we were, why we were here, and how Mr. Henthorn could be of service to us. I worked for many days composing this essay; including many rough drafts and bad ideas. The first part of the prompt was by far the hardest, it took the most thinking. Prewriting consisted mainly of sitting around trying to figure out who I actually thought I was. I wrote about 3 rough drafts before deciding on how I was going to present myself. After finally liking one draft, I did numerous amounts of editing. The editing process was difficult for me because I did not want to mess up my very first essay and make a bad first impression. Revising the essay was much simpler with help from peers. The benefits of using a formatted writing process are ultimately what lead to my higher grade. This process helps to organize, edit, and write with ease during difficult assignments. To better organize I wrote many drafts and bulleted list of important ideas to include, which helped to be sure I included all necessary points. Editing was made easier by my peers who read over the essay and gave me feedback from different perspectives to improve the flow and structure of the essay. And lastly, the ease of writing the final draft came from this described process used. Without this…
