Portrayal of love in a midsummer nights dream
As Lysander says, "The course of true love never did run smooth." Love in A Midsummer Night's Dream is portrayed as complicated and difficult, yet Shakespeare does it in a way that is humorous and lighthearted. In this play love often brings out the worst in people, yet in the end it's what brings everyone back together. Love has the ability to spellbind people as Shakespeare represents symbolically through Puck's actions, and we see how intensely complicated it can be when it nearly tears apart Hermia's family and causes argument between the four main human characters. The four types of love, forced love, parental love, romantic love and complicated love permeate all aspects of life in this play and we see the awesome power it has over human emotion, psychology, and behavior.
In the beginning of the play we see a forced love between Theseus and Hippolyta the queens of the Amazons. Theseus mentions in act 1 “I wooed thee with my sword, and won thy love doing thee injury”. In Act 5 scene 1, Hippolyta says “My Theseus”, this shows she is willing to marry him. We as readers cannot be sure if both of these characters are really in love or marrying because Theseus has won a battle. Throughout the play it seems that His love for Hippolyta had probably grown for her and leading both of them being married, since he understood the four lovers love between Hermia, Helena, Demetrius, and Lysander with one another. This probability made him vulnerable to the effects of love people have for one another.
Another type of love Shakespeare shows is parental love between Egeus and Hermia. Egeus seems to appear very commanding and strict. His character represents that the father has the right of way and the boss. The reason being is even though Hermia is madly in love with Lysander he refuses to let them marry.
