Posadas Family Tradition
During the days of December, my family and I enjoy celebrating a family tradition called Posadas every year. Posadas occur during the days between December 16th-24th. They are celebrated to show and honor the journey Joseph and Mary took to search for a safe area to give birth to Jesus. My whole family comes together at one of our houses for the 9 days to pray, enjoy Mexican foods and desserts, and a refreshment called ponche de frutas. The type of foods we eat are tamales and tacos. The desserts that are served are ones like cake or pie. El ponche de frutas is a drink made from fruits such as pineapple, tejocote, jamaica flor, sugar cane, cinnamon, apples, raisins, and dried plums. We then pray the Rosary, an after praying we sing songs asking

I will never forget the Christmas when I was 14 years old. The whole day was so wonderful and exciting. We had to wake up and unwrap presents early because my father was working that day so everyone woke up at 5:00 AM. After all the presents were given out, everyone said was saying goodbye to my father and went back to sleep. At 9:00 AM, we had to wake up to clean the house because we have “Christmas Brunch” every other year where my whole family comes to have a meal. My mom has a total of 5 brothers and sisters. And they all came with their families, which included their kids and some of their kids even have children. So, at my house, there was a rough total of about fifty family members for the brunch. The food that we ate on this day was unbelievably and utterly amazing. Most of the types of food that we devoured were Polish and German cultural foods, which are the two major nationalities in my family. There was fried Polish sausage with sautéed onions. They were a perfect combination of saltiness to sweetness. Then there were some sweet and creamy pecan rolls that my grandmother used to make all the time, but unfortunately I could not have one since I am allergic to nuts. Then to top all of those foods, there were all different sorts of pierogi. There were the family favorite potato pierogi, the sweet cheese pierogi, and then there were the blueberry pierogi which are my favorite. Those foods were the three items that we mostly ate at the brunch. All the adults would be either drinking coffee, soda, or some alcoholic beverages and for me my favorite thing to drink: Polish carbonated water.…

Christmas is another time of celebration. For Chileans, Christmas time is in the summer, but they still do some of the things people do here in America. One of these things is their Santa – Viejito Pascuero or Old man Christmas. Viejito Pascuero delivers the gifts in a sleigh and either enters the house through the chimney or a window. Most of them also remember that Christmas is to celebrate Christ. Carols will be sung and the Bible story about Jesus' birth will be read. They even will attend mass on Christmas Eve.…

Sadly, we do not have the luxury of visiting our relatives every year but, we have gone twice during Christmas and New Year, and Christmas was celebrated quite differently. During these trips I learned a lot about my heritage and the importance of tradition. You don’t hear the words Santa Claus, and children don’t receive presents on Christmas Day. Instead, we celebrate Dia de los Reyes, or Three Kings’ Day which is celebrated on January 6th .This special holiday commemorates the three wise men who traveled a distance to bring gifts for the infant baby Jesus. Aside from this holiday, we also participated in las posadas, it is a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s arrival in Bethlehem, performed just before Christmas. Young adults perform these reenactments as they ride on donkey in the rancho, searching for hospitality. Once they are turned away three times, the entire community gathers together at the local church for warm bowls of pozole and mugs of chocolate (Mexican hot chocolate). This reenactment is crucial to our tradition as it is performed several times leading up to Christmas. During my stay in Mexico and participating in all these holidays I learned that there is much more to life than receiving the most gifts during the holidays. My stay there taught me to be humble and to value the important…

I can't move without a plant touching my skin. Everything I loved about this rainforest just this morning is elevating my heart rate and killing my logical thinking capacity. The sheer denseness of the foliage had made me feel cozied, like in all this space I could still be snug. The thousands of noises had crashed over me as refreshing as any waterfall, overriding my senses and setting my brain to the same chemical soup it was in when I first fell in love. In that cocktail of endorphins, I have wandered too far, now the closeness, the sameness, the noises are like robbers at the door, banging for entrance and the phone line is dead.…
