Pg 2 gifts from their allies. Zeus had received the thunderbolt, Poseidon received the trident, and Hades had gotten the helmet of invisibility. After they have received their gifts, Zeus , Poseidon, and Hades drue lots to see who would rule/takeover the three major realms. Those were the sky, the sea, and the underworld. Hades was given the underworld, Poseidon was given the sea and Zeus was given the sky.
