Abstract
The Effects of Bullying and the College Student
For nearly a year, as many as 15 girls ganged up on 12-year-old Rebecca Ann Sedwick and picked on her, authorities say, bombarding her with online messages such as “You should die” and “Why don’t you go kill yourself.” Rebecca couldn’t take it anymore. She changed one of her online screen names to “That Dead Girl.” She messaged a boy in North Carolina: “I’m jumping.” And then, on Monday, the Lakeland girl went to an abandoned concrete plant, climbed a tower and hurled herself to her death (The Blaze, 2013).
“Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems” Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. An Imbalance of Power kids who bully use their power, such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people. (Stopbullying.gov, 2013).
Over 3.2 million students are bullied every year. (Do Something.org,) bullying is a terrible mental, physical, or psychological assault on someone else. Bullying has several effects on students even college students. Bullying could cause severe damage to a person that last long-term. Malicious behavior such as bullying can forever change the lives of students. The effects of bullying can be so severe as to last even throughout one’s college career; however, these
