In the reading, The Sponsors of Literacy by Deborah Brandt she talks about how literacy was received and withheld from people because of socio-economic classes. Brandt claims that there is a connection between literacy and economic development or as she refers to them as sponsors of literacy which can either help, sensor, or withhold all together the ability to be literate. However, students do need not only sufficient funds but also more time to learn, so as teachers need adequate time to teach. The theories of Friedrich Froebel, the founder of kindergarten have influenced kindergartens in several regions including in Finland and Ontario, Canada. The kindergarten program in Finland is one of envy as it contributes the nation’s successful educational system. Kindergarten in Finland is a free service available to all children, which is similar to Ontario, Canada’s program which is also free to children in the province. The following paper will explore kindergarten in Finland and Ontario and illustrate that in spite of their differing systems, the principal focus of kindergarten in each region is to prepare students for formal schooling. The programs, curriculum, teacher qualifications and roles in each area collectively support school readiness. The present work, led by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association (NGA), builds on the foundation laid by states in their decades-long work on crafting high-quality education standards. The Standards also draw on the most important international models as well as research and input from numerous sources, including state departments of education, scholars, assessment developers, professional organizations, educators from kindergarten through college, and parents, students, and other members of the public. In their design and content, refined through successive drafts and numerous rounds of feedback, the Standards represent a synthesis of the best elements of standards-related work to date and an important advance over that previous work. As specified by CCSSO and NGA, the Standards are (1) research and evidence based, (2) aligned with college and work expectations, (3) rigorous, and (4) internationally benchmarked. A particular standard was included in the document only when the best available evidence indicated that its mastery was essential for college and career readiness in a twenty-first-century, globally competitive society. The Standards are intended to be a living work: as new and better evidence emerges, the Standards will be revised accordingly. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act functions as a data driven decision-making educational tool. This governmental act also provides support to teachers and administrators so that they can achieve these goals. "Yet we often find our most experienced and effective teachers in our least challenging settings. Until this trend is reversed, we will not be able to solve our education system 's - and our country 's - biggest challenges. We must do a better job of treating teachers like the professionals they are and rewarding those who take on tougher work and get results." By encouraging effective professional development this encourages teachers to better themselves to better educate our children. This also provides funds for programs that encourage teachers to remain current on educational trends. With these provisions a significant portion of this money is often spent to help teachers better prepare students for standardized testing. NCLB receives grants for excellence in teaching. This money is provided to reward successful teachers and principals. The downside is that the success of teachers and principals is often measured through the same flawed instrument of students ' test scores on the standardized tests. In Texas, this law has severely been impacted by a variety of teachers who are not highly qualified to educate these students and schools that are need in of drastic educational improvements at the moment. From the beginning, Texas has served has a representation for several of the requirements listed in the NCLB act because schools were already enforcing testing and accountability provisions. However, disagreements between Texas' statutory testing and accountability systems and the new federal requirements have produced uncertainty and led to problems in the execution of key provisions of NCLB. Alterations in the provisions of Texas' testing and accountability were made to meet the provisions of the NCLB act. One of the provisions here in Texas is that most students now take the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) in replacement of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS). The No Child Left Behind act forced school districts to restructure failing schools. During the restructuring process, of some of the schools, the teaching staff and the principals were changed entirely. With the complete change of leadership and teaching staff the schools are showing much needed growth. With NCLB it forced FWCS to increase effort and attention towards the English Language Learners. FWCS has decreased the learning gap between majority students and ELLs students. NCLB has given the needed push to address the achievement gap among all minority groups. With NCLB in place parents are more informed and given the opportunity to participate more in their child’s education. Our nation is at risk: this is how the legendary “A Nation at Risk” opened its scathing assessment of American public schools in 1983. The paper gave five recommendations to fix the problems of the U.S. education system: strengthened requirements, measurable standards, higher pay for teachers, increased time in the classroom, and accountability.
