If this story had originated from an oral tale one could chalk this up to the fact that most of these tales include scenes of sexual and physical violence because they were originally entertainment for a whole village. Maybe that is the type of feeling Rossetti was trying to give in her story. However, it's hard to say for certain what Rossetti was trying to convey. There are many theories on what she was using this story as a metaphor for. One theory that of sisterhood and feminism. Sisterhood and was very important to Rossetti, who worked with "fallen women" at the St. Mary Magdalene. Perhaps she hoped that this poem, would inspire even fallen women to seek the path to redemption, leaving their past indiscretions behind.
