Post-Secondary Education In The United States
Currently the United States government has allocated about 6.28% ($69.98 billion) of federal funds to education as compared to 53.71% ($598.49 billion) to military and defense (National Priorities Project). As of 2013 the United States ranks 17th worldwide in overall education of developed nations (Zhao). What used to be a country of great minds and free thinkers has turned into an average country due to cultural and societal changes. Education is an integral part of society yet only 80% of kid’s graduate high school and only 38% graduate from college or post-secondary education (The Learning Curve). How does education affect good and evil and why are students who seek out better educational opportunities ridiculed for doing so? Staub

Despite The U.S education is prestigiously considered one of the best one worldwide, it now has issues shocking us with more illiterate students seen all over. As Micheal Moore, an Author, Filmmaker and Winning Oscar director, bring to light this phenomenon in his article" Idiot Nation" he labels the education system as "subservience" and " go out of its way to remain ignorant and stupid." The author argues the money has been continuously steered off for education resulting in deterioration of school buildings, not sufficient libraries and low qualities of teachers, that are plaguing the education today. In order to fully analyze and understand Micheal Moore' article, I will focus on presenting different approaches on the impact of insufficiently funding the flawed education.…

Today, 314.5 million people call themselves Americans. Each of them, with God permitting, will make the journey to old age. However, in this huge set of individuals, roughly fifteen percent of adults over the age of twenty-five have not received a high school diploma (“Educational Attainment in the United States: 2009”). By itself, this percentage feels rather small, and so we as Americans pride ourselves in our educational system. After crunching the numbers, however, this measly percentage actually represents twenty-nine million Americans, twenty-nine million individuals who lack an accomplished high school education. Aristotle would be displeased to say the least. In 2008, then senator Barack Obama delivered a speech to the Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts titled “What’s Possible for our Children.” Though intended for his election campaign, the speech also reflected this introduction’s attitude, calling attention to the gaping holes in American education. More specifically, however, Obama promoted educational reform based on a three-point platform: “fixing” No Child Left Behind (an act which encourages state standardized tests to measure and regulate primary and secondary education in the United States), encouraging teacher reforms and furthering teaching…

Education should be used with a purpose and that purpose is to learn, to educate, and to help students become successfully academically. However, that is not always the case. Education at times is used for all the wrong reasons. “Repeatedly, Americans have followed a common pattern in devising educational prescriptions for specific social or economic ills. Once they had discovered a problem, they labeled it and taught a course on the subject: alcohol or drug instruction to fight addictions; sex education to combat syphilis or AIDS; home economics to lower the divorce rate; driver education to eliminate carnage on the highway; and vocational training or…

The American education system has been on a gradual decline over the past several years and has become very non competitive to other nations across the world. This is quite surprising considering the fact that America has one of the most developed and strongest economies in the world yet is so far behind other countries in the education matter. One of the most recent debated issues in the U.S. Department of Education, is the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act signed by former President George W. Bush. According to many education intellects, this act is holding America back from achieving its full potential and getting back on track with the rest of the world. Diane Ravitch, who is a historian of American education, addresses this issue in “Time to Kill ‘No Child Left Behind.’” She says, “Congress should get rid of…

Schooling is seen as a necessary part of life in America for generations, needed to transform the children of the nation into happy and productive individuals. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with overall performance. According to the Program for International Student Assessment survey administered by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in 2012, the United States ranks 27th in math, 17th in reading, and 20th in science. According to the OECD the US spends more on education than most countries with an average of $115,000 per student (PISA, 1). Unfortunately, that level of spending has not equaled an improvement in education. We have tried to improve our schools with more money, better teachers, and legislation such as No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. What if the true problem with schooling is not the components of the system, but the system itself? In the article “Against School” John Taylor Gatto present several causes for the failing of the American public school system. One of the main causes he puts forth is the institution of compulsory schooling in a system designed to repress the working class, keeping the classes…

The United States has always been known for its high political status and producing exceedingly educated political leaders. Back then, America was the unchallenged education leader in the world, but now, in present day America, the graduation rate has plummeted. Thus, creating a problem that other countries are surpassing American scholastic performance, eminently among their younger students. In America too many high…

The atmosphere in which we grow up and the influences of our peers shape who we are. Depending on these factors, people achieve happiness under different circumstances. I believe that graduating from a well-known, reputable, university is more fulfilling than winning a lottery because, in the latter, the prize money will eventually be depleted and the chances of earning or winning another lottery are slim. In contrast, post-secondary education is not a waste of time and money because going to university or college would mean acquiring more knowledge in specific subjects, achieving the goal of completing a degree, and increase the likelihood of attaining skills to apply in everyday life to earn a living.…

Education is an important aspect of how the world survives. Without it, the next generation would never excel; therefore, defeating the purpose of a species to thrive and gain knowledge through reproduction. The way that education works is based upon what goals are set and who is supervising them. In the United States, there is a Department of Education that works with small groups to set standards. Other countries have extremely different systems, some more rigorous and others non-existent. In many other first world countries, higher education is paid for through the government which is something the U.S. was previously considering through the campaign of Bernie Sanders. Despite the shiny surface of free college tuition, there are setbacks.…

Post Secondary education plays an important and critical role in the social, cultural and economic success of people. As students move on to postsecondary education, costs can rise considerably. The role education plays makes it possible for young people to take advantage of a range of employment opportunities, but post-secondary education is not financially accessible for many people. Funding also creates the negative effect of stress from long term debt that many students face in post secondary education. As government funding fails, it also creates the downfall of high quality faculties. Post Secondary education systems encourage people to pursue higher education to build future economic success but in doing so funds should also be affordable. Since funds are expensive, negative effects become more prevalent throughout post secondary education.…

If people are educated it makes it easier for them to later move onto college and higher education which then will lead to more employment options. “ We observe that student achievement in the United States is estimated to have increased by 1.6% of a standard deviation.” (Hanushek, Woessmann, Peterson) a standard deviation is the increments shown on a graph in which measures the extent of differences between the the subjects being compared. While 1.6% of a deviation doesn't sound like a lot, it makes a big difference when talking about education, if the US keeps making steady increases in education quality, and student achievement everyone will be able to get a quality education which will then benefit them later in life. The increases in education that our country has been making sets up children for success at an early age, teaching them to work hard at their goals and that education can get them where they want to be. “US students in elementary school do seem to be performing considerably better than they were a couple of decades ago. Most notably, the performance of 4th grade students on math tests rose steeply between the mid-1990’s and 2011.” (Hanushek, Woessmann, Peterson) The unemployment rates for those with only a high school education was 6.3%…
