My Dearest, Classmates:
I just got back from my virtual field trip to the National Institute of Nursing Research! I could go on and on about all the fun I had! The NINR takes pride in their mission to support and enhance the wellbeing of every individual in America through nursing research (National Institute of Nursing Research, 2011, para. 1). The most exciting bit of information that I found made this cardiac nurse’s heart flutter when the NINR included heart failure patients in their self management research trials. The self management theme is one of four that was built on the NINR’s Strategic Plan to meet the health care needs of Americans. The Strategic Plan is divided into five areas of health care needs. The five areas include the following: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Advancing the Quality of Life: Symptom Management and Self-Management, End-of-Life and Palliative Care, Innovation, and Developing Nurse Scientists (National Institute of Nursing Research [NINR], 2011, p. 7). When I began my virtual trip I was unsure if I would be able to find information that would impact my clinical practice, but from further researching the trial with heart failure patients I found my flair within the website. The clinical trial presented information on heart failure patients that received educational interventions on medication obedience had a longer period of time with no cardiac issues compared to those individuals with no education (Wu, 2011, p. 6). The clinical trial utilized educational interventions and strategies by including the patients’ family members into the teaching sessions (Wu, 2011, p. 4). I love educating my cardiac patients and a majority of the admissions to my intensive care unit is from the lack of medication adherence. I plan on using the strategies of incorporating family members during the educational part of my clinical practice. I hope everyone enjoys my information I found from my virtual trip!
