Jackie returns from the kitchen with a bright yellow bag, brighter than the morning sun. She grabs the top between her fingers, the crackle of the bag alerts Jimmy of what she has. Jackie pulls apart the bag, feeling the rush of air towards her face. The smell of cholesterol engulfs her. She reaches in and pulls out one of the golden crisps. She places it on her tongue, letting the taste explode in her mouth. She finally makes her way to the couch, dropping herself down next to Jimmy. He reaches his hand towards the bag, but Jackie rips the bag away. “My chips!” she says, mouth full. …show more content…
“Jimmy stop it! You’re scaring me!” she shoves at his chest, but his eyes don’t open and he makes no move to get up. Jackie forces a swallow, before yelling for their mother. Their mother comes barreling out of her office, she slides to a stop at the sight of her son’s head seeping blood, and his body pinning her daughter to the ground. She almost dives forward, she reaches for her son’s neck to feel for a pulse, when she feels none, she releases a scream of grief. She turns away, the sobs racking her body, before falling to her knees, screaming over losing her son. The memories fly by faster, the funeral, the first day she went back to school, the first Christmas without him, his birthdays, and the day he would have graduated high school.
Jacquelyn forces the memories to the back of her mind. Jackie died that day, the innocent little girl. Jackie was the reason Jimmy was dead. That’s why Jacquelyn is no longer Jackie. That’s why, Jimmy never got to be Jim.
Jackie is the reason why Jacquelyn doesn’t have a brother.
She glares at the potato chips gripped between her clenched fists, she thought that after twenty years, she could handle even the smell of the chips. Apparently not.
