CHAPTER 1
Introduction

Background of the Study
Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 50-100 million people all over the world fall victim to dengue fever. And every year, 20,000 of these victims end up dead (the Philippine Star, 2012). According to the report of the Philippine Association of Entomologists (PAE), the incidence and threat of dengue continue to rise, year after year. (Samaniego, 2012). This deadly disease is just caused by a single bite of a carrying mosquito.
The mosquito is a common flying insect that is found around the world. The mosquito is often a carrier of diseases, such as malaria, encephalitis, yellow fever, dengue fever, dog heartworm, West Nile virus, and many others. The females, who drink blood, can carry disease from one animal to another as they feed. The mosquito goes through four separate and distinct stages of its life cycle and they are as follows: Egg, Larva, pupa, and adult.
It has been found out by studies that buyo, lime and papaya has potential properties that can terminate mosquito larvae.
This study entitled ‘Buyo (Piper betle L.), Lime (Citrus aurantifolia), and Papaya (Carica papaya L.) Leaves Powder against Mosquito Larvae ’ aims to investigate the effectiveness of the three leaves powder on the idea of destroying first the source of the problem by terminating first the larvae.

Objective of the Study This study, aims to determine the capability of the three plants’ leaves namely: Buyo, Lime and Papaya as a terminating agent, specifically it aims to:
1. Determine the efficacy of the three plant’s leaves against mosquito larvae in the form of powder.
2. Determine if there is a significant difference between the effects of the treatments towards the mosquito larvae.

Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the efficacy Buyo, Lime and Papaya in terminating mosquito larvae. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

    The antifeedant activity of the extracts choice and no-choice test methods, after 24 and 48 hours in each test, against 7 day old (3rd instar) larvae of S. litura on castor leaves. Stock solutions of the test compounds were prepared in the carrier solvents. Further dilution was done in emulsified water by maintaining emulsifier (Tween – 80) level at 0.5 % to yield various concentrations. Castor leaf discs (4 cm diameter) were punched out from the washed and dried castor leaves. Leaf discs were dipped thoroughly in each of the concentration and air dried. Moist filter paper discs were placed in glass Petri plates (9 cm diameter) on which a single treated leaf disc was kept (for no-choice method). In choice method, in each Petri dish, along with a treated leaf disc, one untreated leaf disc of same size was kept.     The shocking increase of dengue incidents year after year is a concern of our local health department and the society. Studies show that most incidents affect children and adolescent people. Commercially, there are various products of mosquito repellents readily available for consumers but most of them are highly made from chemicals that are damaging to the skin and are expensive, making it less accessible to most people. This study aims to determine the effect of the said mosquito killer (atis leaves). Especially it will answer the following questions: 1. Does the said mosquito repellent (atis leaves) cheaper than the commercial ones? 2. Will this mosquito repellent (atis leaves) be effective in repelling mosquitos? Atis (Anona squamosa), a tropical plant that usually grows spontaneously in the Philippines, aside from bearing fruits of white, sweet, soft, juicy and mild agreeable flavored flesh, also yields leaves where government health researchers found extracts for the formulation of an effective anti-mosquito repellant. It is not only against dengue, in fact, but against all mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and filariasis especially in areas of the country where incidence is high. It also serves as a personal care product used in preventing mosquito bites that cause itchiness, inflammation and discomfort to individuals. The repellent uses a washable, oil – based formulation and it 's biodegrable since, it is derived from advantage against other well known repellents which are chemical based in formulation. The atis (Anona squamosa) leaves, as well as its fruit, have been found beneficial to human use and needs. Studies conducted by big institutions such as the Department of Science and Technology and by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) shows that the atis plant has components that are potent in repelling mosquitos.
