In this short piece, “Our Daughters, Ourselves” by Stevie Cameron the many feats that woman have overcome in recent years are highlighted, as are the many setbacks. This piece is basically a summation of a daughters life from an over-cautious parents point of view. Although this is a short piece of writing, it does indeed touch on some of the sexual differences that still exist in our society today such as male-dominated post-secondary fields like engineering and how equally qualified woman don’t usually receive the same level of jobs as men with similar academic credentials. The piece is told from the perspective of what I can assume is a mother that went through the same sexual differences in her era and is only hoping that her daughter does not have to go through the same hardships, only to find that society still isn’t equal no matter how much progress we have made. Cameron supports her whole piece of work at the end by mentioning the tragic events of the Montreal Massacre and how all of their lives parents have been telling their daughters that they can do whatever they want and have equal opportunity only to have their dreams burned down by a sexist male who could blamed woman for his failures. I found this article interesting as I found a correlation between the reading and many topics that I learn about in my Human Resources courses such as creating equality in the workplace and equal opportunity for both sexes.…

Keeping these spectrum of issues in mind HUL introduced project Shakti, a flag-ship programme was initiated by HUL to capture untapped rural markets. The model of shakti built on the features that best suit the rural folks. So the project shakti featured to win a big pie of the rural market and also wanted to create a deep social impact.HUL partnered with recipients of the micro-credits by offering the village women to be micro-entrepreneurs. HUL tied up with MACTS to sell its products, which subsequently would sell it into the SHGs. A member of each SHG was appointed entrepreneur by the SGH members. The entrepreneurs sold the products to the local outlets at a price that enabled the retailer to win a margin when sold to consumers. HUL sold its products at a discount to the entrepreneurs in such a price that it can avoid the channel conflict. To help the entrepreneurs to create and grow businesses , HUL hired RSP to coach the women. Sensing the low sales volumes in initial months HUL pressed into service the incentive mechanism for newly appointed entrepreneurs, rewarding them in cash for visiting a cluster of homes independent of the amount sold attached with it the…

Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) are documents required by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank before a country can be considered for debt relief within the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative.[1][2] PRSPs are also required before low-income countries can receive aid from most major donors and lenders.[2] The IMF specifies that the PRSP should be formulated according to five core principles.[1] The PRSP should be country-driven, result-oriented, comprehensive, partnership-oriented, and based on a long-term perspective.[1] The PRS process encourages countries to develop a more poverty-focused government and to own their own strategies through developing the plan in close consultation with the population.[3][4] A comprehensive poverty analysis and wide-ranging participation are vital parts of the PRSP formulation process.[5][6] There are many challenges to PRS effectiveness, such as state capacity to carry out the established strategy. Criticism of PRSP include aid conditionality, donor influence, and poor fulfillment of the participatory aspect.[2]…

When it comes to fighting poverty in the sub-continent, where do you start? Perhaps by recruiting and training hundreds, even thousands of fundraisers, says Ken Burnett. Though we’d only arrived in the country at 2.30 that morning we were out on the streets late the same Saturday evening to see and meet the homeless of Delhi. It was my wife Marie’s first visit to India and I couldn’t resist showing her the real Delhi underbelly. So I arranged with friends from a tiny local NGO called Aashray Adhikar Abhiyan (AAA) to visit their work among the 168,000 homeless people who each night live rough on the streets of India’s teeming, chaotic capital. Young and old, men, women, children and even babies all coexist in this bizarre underworld alongside stray dogs, rats, donkeys and the occasional sacred cow. The numbers seem no exaggeration, though how anyone counts them is beyond comprehension. There are so, so many. It may be the largest population of the dispossessed on our planet, each snatching at sleep when they can as they crowd and cram together in rubbish dumps, graveyards, on pavements, at the road’s edge, on traffic islands, under flyovers, anywhere a fly could land. Here the frail, the sick, the lame and the mentally ill rub shoulders with the barely fit; beggars and thieves sleep alongside sex workers and pimps while predators and exploiters share their limited space beside the vulnerable and exploited. All appear thin as rakes, all united in poverty, discomfort and indignity, all clutching for dear life to what little they’ve got, just clinging on. In the daylight it looks bad enough. As night falls it quickly becomes a living hell beyond the imagination of Dante. Just before midnight we stopped by some rickety huts, AAA’s night shelter for the lucky few it has rescued from the dangers of the street. Here we met young Samina1 whose mother abandoned her on the street as a baby…
