Shortage of occupation is a huge factor in the poverty rate in America. With the shortage of jobs, 4.1 percent of the population in America is unemployed. 4.1 percent is approximately 6.6 million people. The state of Ohio has the highest unemployment rate, but they have implemented many different solutions to decrease their employment rate. The states plans to bring in new restaurants and are in the process of remolding the states mall to add new business and retails. Poverty can cause very high levels of stress that may cause one to commit a violent crime. In stressful situations, one is not to be levelheaded or optimistic. They are most likely wandering where their next meal will come from or how will their light bill get paid. Being optimistic is really the last option one is depending on in. There is a higher rate of mental illness in the poor than in the rich. When one is partaking in poverty, they tend to have a greed or desperation for money. One may make a mistake and end up loosing their job; they can be partaking in poverty with no way to provide for their family. Most schools in Mississippi lack technology; therefore, they do not receive the same education and privileges as others. Statics show that in most areas that have a significantly low poverty rate, the students do not want any better for themselves. Drug abuse is huge factor of poverty. Research done by Robert Kaestner, " Does Drug Use Cause Poverty?" (1999) Indicated that marijuana and cocaine use significantly increases the probability of being poor. Drug users had lower family incomes and were more likely to participate in public assistance programs. It’s hard to judge a person about using drugs without knowing their background but drug abuse can be very toxic to many families. Drug use and addiction have no single cause but the risk factors for drug use include poverty. A person in an impoverished situation may abuse drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with the dangerous environment she lives in, a way to deal with their financial stresses or a way to cope with physical or emotional abuse. Many times, drugs and alcohol are easily accessible in impoverished neighborhoods where some people actually sell drugs in hopes of overcoming poverty. In Richard’s Grant
