Police corruption is a form of police misconduct in which law enforcement officers break their social contract and abuse their power for personal or departmental benefits. This kind of corruption can involve only one officer, or it can involve a group of officers in a group. Police corruption is a challenge to public trust, human rights and legal violations involving serious consequences. Robert Gisevius, Kenneth Bowen, and Anthony Villavaso were New Orleans police officers who were corrupt. They were responsible for the Danziger Bridge shootings in 2005. According to NBC News, “ The five former New Orleans police officers pleaded guilty Wednesday to the 2005 shooting on a bridge involving unarmed civilians in the chaotic days after Hurricane Katrina. All five were convicted in 2011 of civil rights violations for shooting the victims on New Orleans' Danziger Bridge on Sept. 4, 2005, six days after Katrina brought the city to a stand-still. Two people were killed and four others were injured” (Chuck). These actions were a result of corruption of power. On July 31, 2014 six Philadelphia cops were arrested on corruption charges. They supposedly held a drug suspect over the railing of his balcony of the 18th floor of his apartment building as an interrogation technique. They also kidnapped a drug suspect and kept him in a hotel for days while also threatening the suspects family.
