In the midst of McCarthyism, Abigail would continue to be as ruthless and cunning as she was when she confronted the Witch Trials. She accuses Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft so she can marry John Proctor. She was never afraid to lie to save herself and burden others with accusations. He threatens to kill Tituba even though he has no evidence of her guiltiness, which gives him the sense of authority that he is craving. The accusations he makes are likely for attention and just because he can. His struggle for power leads him to do ridiculous things. His actions can be viewed as attention-seeking and power-hungry. Even during McCarthyism, he would still continue to have those traits. In the article “The Red Scare” it says, “McCarthy used hearsay and intimidation to establish himself as a powerful and feared figure in American politics.” Similarly, Parris uses immoral tactics like McCarthy because he keeps the same concern about his position among the community with him throughout the trials. He intimidates his slave while not bothering to question the evidence against her. In The Crucible he says, “There be a faction here, feeding on that news, and I tell you true, sir, I fear there will be riot here”(127). He fears rebellion against his claims because he isn’t confident in his power. He craves it, and therefore blows things out of proportion to make it seem like he isn’t truly scared and insecure.
