Power In Beowulf

People seek power for a reason. When someone uses the word seek in the context of the previous statement, he or she is referring to the word want. Power is the ability to overpower one or many others. Some examples of areas where power is demonstrated is in the government, in relationships, and in society. Power can be physical, generally good, particularly bad, or emotional. In this paper, the answer to the big question will be supported or countered against with the support of British literature. The pieces of British Literature used will include; Beowulf, The Taming of the Shrew, 1984, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Lord of the Rings, and Le Morte d’Arthur, and Carpe Diem poetry. Beowulf is an epic poem about an Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, who is a brave worrier. In this epic, Beowulf is the protagonist because he defeats the evil creature, Grendel who is terrorizing the citizens of Herot. After Beowulf defeats Grendel, he also fights and kills Grendel’s mother because she was also evil. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a Middle English chivalric romance about a knight, Gawain, who is being tested by the Green Knight. The test the Green Knight proposes is that only a brave knight can cut of the Green Knight’s head. Gawain is anxious to prove to the Green Knight that he is powerful and brave, but by the end of the romance, Gawain realizes that he was being tested. Le Morte d’Arthur is a book by Thomas Malory, in which revenge seeking Gawain influenced his king and friend, Arthur, to fight with Lancelot, who is a king as well. Arthur is also at war with Mordred, the antagonist, who eventually ends up killing Arthur. The Taming of the Shrew is a play written by William Shakespeare in which there two sisters and one is a shrew. The father of the two young ladies demands that the shrew, Kate, gets married before her pleasant sister, Bianca does. A man of the name Petruchio marries Kate and forcibly changes her into a polite
