I am glad to have made it this far where I can finally put my skills, knowledge and compassion into practice as a Practical Nurse. In being a Practical Nurse, it requires for one to practice within state regulations such as the Nurse’s Practice Act and follow definite guidelines mandated by the Arizona State Board of Nursing. A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) has many options in employment after passing the NCLEX-PN exam. Practical Nurses can work in places such as skilled nursing facilities, nursing homes, clinics, doctor’s offices, and in some schools. In working as an LPN there are many responsibilities to be cognizant of and thought out thoroughly. From patient safety, medication administration and the nursing process, all must be carried out by a competent Practical Nurse who has passed the required accredited school and state board exam. In practical nursing there are many tasks that differ from the tasks of a nurse whom many be registered. A practical nurse must stay within his or her scope of practice. LPNs can provide safe and effective care in basic medication administration, documentation, gathering data, selecting appropriate nursing interventions, collaborating with health care staff and reporting all inquiries to a Registered Nurse. LPNs must obtain the necessary skills, knowledge and education in providing safe and preventive care to patients that have various medical conditions. When being employed with other members of the health care team, the LPN will need to utilize his or her resources. When seeking help from another staff member, a LPN must only delegate what’s within their scope of practice and delegate tasks that’s within the scope of the receiver such as a Certified Nursing Assistant. An example would be that an LPN can ask another LPN to assist with a med pass but couldn’t ask a CNA to help assist because it’s not in their scope. A task that could be given to a CAN could be as simple as assisting in taking a patient’s vitals or to obtain the patient’s
