Practical Theology
The primary task of the church is to be the church. Richard Osmer in his book, Practical Theology, explains the academic discipline that examines and reflects on religious practices to understand the theology that is enacted in those practices and to consider how theological theory and theological practices can be more fully aligned, changed, or improved. The Descriptive-Empirical Task (or “What is going on?”): Priestly Listening, or “What is going on?” – This is grounded in a theology of presence, attending to others in their particularity within the presence of God.
2. The Interpretive task (or “Why is this going”): Sagely wisdom--This is grounded in the theology of identifying the issues embedded within episodes, situations, and contexts.
3. The Normative Task (or “What ought to be going on?”): Prophetic Discernment – This is grounded in a spirit of discernment, helping others hear and heed God’s Word in the circumstances of their lives and the world.
4.The Pragmatic Task (or “How might we respond?”): Servant Leadership – This is grounded in a spirituality of servant leadership, taking risks on behalf of the congregation to help it better embody its mission as a sign and witness of God’s self-giving love.

While valuing informal and semiformal attending, Osmer focuses on formal attending, which he defines as ‘investigating particular episodes, situations, and contexts through empirical research’. Many congregations do not get involved in current social ills and situations such as racism, sexism, xenophobia. Many people need to hear the good news in these dreaded situations. Bishop Carder says, “A church that cannot struggle together with conflicts over sexuality, interpretation of Scripture, and orthodoxy has little to say to a violently divided world.
This project uses a pragmatic and practical theology to understand the “Therefore go” in Matthew 28:18 by answering the four questions in Osmer’s core task of practical theological interpretation which provide the framework for our response to our evangelistic calling to go.
