Prader-Willi Syndrome Case Study
Medical factors that may impact the behavior: Bonnie has been diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome a life-threatening disorder which begins in childhood. Individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome develop an insatiable appetite which results in chronic overeating and obesity (United States National Library of Medicine, 2015). Bonnie’s diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome is a strong causal link for strong desire to obtain food. Bonnie also has multiple disabilities and sensory problems. Individuals with a sensory processing disorder often experience sensory overload, anxiety, restlessness, and chronic stress which may result in meltdowns. This is due to their difficulty to inhibit or filter non-essential sensory information and their poor ability

Food has become an addiction to these people, as they depend on food to pleasure them. This is known as dopamine, it reacts as our brain is telling them to continue that pleasure, in this case to keep eating. Two of the people we saw in the movie had to be hospitalized. One man was eating almost 14 thousand calories per day. That is what an average person should be eating in two weeks. But this addiction is leading their lives to death. As professor Dulai mentioned in lecture, an individual should maintain a healthy diet. This means having small portions, making half of our plates fruits and vegetables and having different “colors” in our meal. When watching these films, the main foods these individuals would intake is fried foods, candy, cookies, soda, and overall greasy foods. They weren’t showing healthy snacks such as carrots, apples or even grapes. These individuals were eating 10 times the recommended amount of food an individual should eat. This addiction is known as dopamine, which is released by hormones when eating a particular type of food and it makes the individual want more. This particular problem has affected these individuals which…

People who are growing need more calories. People who are active also need more energy for fuel, which means they need to take in more calories than people who are not active. When people are upset, they sometimes have cravings for carb-filled snacks that they are biologically attached to. For example, when an adult has a bad day, they may crave cookies because their mom made them cookies for them as a child, and eating cookies reminds them of a simpler time in life. If someone is working from…

Disturbances in the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin appear to be a characteristic of individuals with eating disorders. Kaye 2005 found a reduction in the levels of the serotonin metabolite 5-HIAA in people with eating disorders. This suggests that brain serotonin pathways are underactive. Using PET scans it has been shown that there are fewer serotonin receptors in the brains of those with eating disorders. The brain serotonin system has been implicated in personality traits linked with eating disorders such as obsessionality, perfectionism, anxiety & depression. A reduction in receptors suggests a dysfunction of the serotonin system.…

Marano gives some of the examples that cause causes eating disorders. With causes you also have the effects. Parents are ultimately why eating disorders are running rampant. When Marano talks about parents raising their kid she exclaims, “They allow them to be socialized by television, the Internet, and by their peers rather than by caring, demanding, and mentoring adults (3).” In addition, she mentions that parents, in particular the mother can also be plagued by eating disorders, which also adds on to the problem. Marano shows this aspect in the case of Katy Palmer. Katy Palmer was vying…

The next disorder I am going to talk about is Anorexia Nervosa or “ana” as a nick name. Anorexia is a disorder where a person restrains from eating in order to lose weight. Causes for anorexia are usually a bad relationship or a breakup that somehow convinces the person into thinking that maybe it was something wrong with them and that maybe they are“fat”. This usually pushes them so far that they may just stop eating all together and slowly start becoming borderline bulimic. Some of the negative side affects of anorexia are: fatigue, hair loss,…
