Some common antiseptics[edit]

A bottle of ethanol (95%) - an antiseptic
Alcohols
Most commonly used are ethanol (60–90%), 1-propanol (60–70%) and 2-propanol/isopropanol (70–80%) or mixtures of these alcohols. They are commonly referred to as "surgical alcohol". Used to disinfect the skin before injections are given, often along with iodine (tincture of iodine) or some cationic surfactants (benzalkonium chloride 0.05–0.5%, chlorhexidine 0.2–4.0% or octenidine dihydrochloride 0.1–2.0%).
Quaternary ammonium compounds
Also known as Quats or QAC's, include the chemicals benzalkonium chloride (BAC), cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTMB), cetylpyridinium chloride (Cetrim, CPC) and benzethonium chloride (BZT). Benzalkonium chloride is used in some pre-operative skin disinfectants (conc. 0.05–0.5%) and antiseptic towels. The antimicrobial activity of Quats is inactivated by anionic surfactants, such as soaps. Related disinfectants include chlorhexidine and octenidine.
Boric acid
Used in suppositories to treat yeast infections of the vagina, in eyewashes, and as an antiviral to shorten the duration of cold sore attacks. Put into creams for burns. Also common in trace amounts in eye contact solution.
Brilliant Green
A triarylmethane dye still widely used as 1% ethanol solution in Eastern Europe and ex-USSR countries for treatment of small wounds and abscesses. Efficient against gram-positive bacteria.
Chlorhexidine Gluconate
A biguanidine derivative, used in concentrations of 0.5–4.0% alone or in lower concentrations in combination with other compounds, such as alcohols. Used as a skin antiseptic and to treat inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). The microbicidal action is somewhat slow, but remanent. It is a cationic surfactant, similar to Quats.
Hydrogen peroxide
Used as a 6% (20 Vols) solution to clean and deodorize wounds and ulcers. More common 3% solutions of hydrogen peroxide have been used in household first aid for scrapes, etc. However, even

    a. Currently betadine is being used when preparing the surgical site at the institution being examined. When attempting to figure out who made the decision for the way skin is prepped, it is unknown. Though to change the current practice, the nursing practice council will need to show evidence supporting the change. Once that is done, it may be brought to the nurse manager in the OR and up to administration to help facilitate a change. Once the change is approved, it is up to nursing leadership to show a good example and educate the current nursing staff on the importance.…

Moreover, utilize an isotonic saline, wound cleanser, or an antimicrobial solution. If an antimicrobial solution is utilized, dilute it well and warm the solution to body temperature; but do not utilize a microwave to avoid overheating. If the wound appears contaminated clean it every time the dressing is changed. Do not utilize cotton balls, instead utilize gauze squares or a nonwoven swab that do not shed. To perform sterile wound care; first utilize clean gloves to remove the dressing and properly dispose the soiled dressing. Then perform hand hygiene and set up a sterile field. Next, open the sterile dressing while utilizing surgical aseptic technique and place the drape near the wound. Then, open the sterile solution and pour it on the gauze in the container. Now, apply the sterile gloves and proceed with cleaning the wound with the gloved hands or forceps utilizing the gauze with the solution on it. Always keep the forceps tip lower than the handles to prevent the contaminated fluids from coming in contact with the handle or the wrist. Utilize a clean sterile swab for each stroke and clean from the top to bottom starting at the center of the wound. Likewise, you could clean outward from the incision, again starting at the center of the wound and utilizing a clean sterile swab for each stroke. To clean around a Penrose drainage site, swab the area in half or full circles while moving outward and utilizing a clean sterile swab for each stroke. Then dry the surrounding area, but not the wound itself. Next, apply a precut gauze around the drain, and a sterile dressing over the drain and incision. Apply the final surgipad; remove and discard gloves, then secure the dressing with tape. Finally, perform hand hygiene and document the procedure. (849,…

Disinfectants are agents that destroy many of the components of the micro-organism at once. These disinfectant agents are composed of many different ingredients such as sterile water and surfactants. The disinfectants will be used against both gram negative and gram positive bacteria. And data will be collected as to how much the disinfectant can reduce the count of the bacterial organism with a contact time of five minutes. We will judge whether this specific disinfectant can prevent bacteria from spreading.…

SATRACK was developed to validate and monitor the Trident missile guidance error model in the System Flight Test Program. It is the primary instrumentation and processing system responsible for accuracy evaluation of the Navy’s Strategic Weapon System. Instrumentation and processing systems available when the Trident Development Program began could not meet this need. APL conceived and led the development of the SATRACK system to fulfill this requirement. Prototype instrumentation required for the missile and ground station data collection functions were developed at APL to validate the concept, and we generated specifications controlling the development of the operating missile and ground station hardware. We also developed and operate the SATRACK processing facility, which includes a unique preprocessing hardware and software configuration and an extensive post processing analysis capability. Additionally, the APL satellite tracking facility has operated as a backup SATRACK recording site for all East Coast test flights since 1978. SATRACK fully met all its guidance subsystem evaluation requirements and also provided weapon system error model insights that would not have been possible without its unique ability to detect and allocate small error contributors to miss distances observed in the flight test program. SATRACK not only validated the Trident system accuracy, but the test-derived and -validated system error models have allowed the command authority to confidently assign and allocate targets to sea-based strategic resources.…
