The source Omaha Platform was published in 1982, the century where bimetallism had finally ended due to the gold standard act in 1873, that was heavily opposed by the Populist party.
Donnelly’s influence to write this source was developed during the argument over the ratio of silver to gold.During this time, Populists has begun emphasizing the importance of upgrading the amount of silver needed in the 16:1 ratio of silver and gold. Populists such as Donnelly had begun to create various ideas which could help the working class Americans. Bimetallism was a concern which could help generalize a multitude of their problems, with debt and income. Donnelly had made himself known throughout the Progressive Era which had begun close to his death around 1901 (Encyclopedia.com). This was because the Progressive Era was built on attempting to fix problems caused by the corrupt government, urban and industrial changes, which he had tried to do for the working
class.
The source explains with the titled area “Goals” that the main goal was to change the ratio of silver to gold and with that other related problems of the working class. “Those were the main goals of the Omaha Platform, all focused on helping rural and working-class Americans” (Omaha Platform, Goals). The source provides specific detail of what the main goals were, the conclusion is set in the ending of their preamble as it is a document which is reporting the following. “Whereas, Other questions have been presented for our consideration, we hereby submit the following, not as a part of the Platform of the People’s Party, but as resolutions expressive of the sentiment of this Convention” (Omaha Platform, Expression of Sentiments).
