Precious Movie Essay
The harsh reality of child abuse often puts school staff members on the front lines of identifying possible abuse. Some children will talk to you about the abuse they may endure. While other children may feel threatened not to tell or may they might not realize that what is occurring is abusive. In most cases, children may be too young to understand, fearful, embarrassed or ashamed. Child maltreatment is a problematic social issue affecting millions of children. That's why I'm proud to say as a childcare provider I'm very glad that (Mandated Reporting and Privacy Policies) are in lieu.
I would like to use the movie "Precious" by the director "Lee Daniels" as a reference as I talk about the topic of "Mandating Reporting and Privacy Policies" this movie is grounded in New York City's, Harlem, in 1987. It's about an overweight, mistreated, an uneducated teen who is pregnant with her second child by her stepfather who has also suffered horrific child abuse by her mother along with explicit sexual acts. How would I help this helpless young woman get through life? There are so many forms of child maltreatment that’s why we have to be the voice for our children. Theirs Physical abuse, Emotional damage, Sexual abuse, child neglect, self-inflicted injuries, some parents may even keep their children home from school or don't support the child's school attendance. It is a requirement that employees of public school districts report any suspected child abuse or neglect but sadly many don't. Many children while at school may scrape their knees, bruise their arms, bump their heads, or may even break their bones, and they may have reasonable explanations for these injuries however these episodes may not have an explanation that seems to fit the injury or they may be very indirect about how the injury

All staff need to be aware of how concerns of suspected abuse should be reported and recorded. These records will include notes, details of what a child has said, dates, times, and records of meetings with other agencies. Anything that is said by a child that causes concerns needs to be followed up. In the school I volunteer in there are two designated safeguarding officers, so there is always at least one on site. Each teacher has their own log book to note and record concerns in immediately; as well as a central log book held by the safeguarding officer to collate all concerns and follow…

In the movie, Ordinary People, the Jarrett family face quite intense conflicts throughout their everyday lives after a son, and brother, of the family dies in a boating incident. The family’s overall dysfunction results from each person’s unhealthy way of grieving and not letting out their emotions and sorrow. Instances in which the family’s dysfunction was shown include: at the breakfast table, in the family’s backyard, when putting up the Christmas tree, at the mall, and when the mother, Beth, and the dad, Calvin, were on vacation. Beth Jarrett, especially, does not practice supplying Conrad, her son, with needs, such as those of Maslow’s Hierarchy of human needs, like love and belonging. She does this by examples like refusing to have a conversation about the death of Buck, the one who drowned in a boating incident. The father, Calvin, is quite distant and tries to reconnect with his depressed and suicidal son, but struggles to do so. Conrad, himself, copes with the help of his psychiatrist, Dr. Berger. The ways each member of the family uses fight and/or flight mode are a myriad, and this, along with possible conflict management strategies, which they could have utilized and have helped the Jarretts, will be expounded upon.…

Every setting must have policies and procedures set out to safeguard children. This must include an explanation of how to report any concerns you may have regarding the safety of children. There must be a designated practitioner who takes responsibility for safeguarding in every setting. At my work setting the designated person is the on-site social worker and they are responsible for liaising with local statutory children’s services agencies as well as the Local Safeguarding Children board. It is also their responsibility to train all staff so that they fully understand the safeguarding policy and can implement it in their everyday work. This will help staff to identify signs of possible abuse or neglect as soon as possible. This may include: unexplained bruising, a change in their well-being or changes in the child’s behaviour.…
