Predominance of Government In the movie Matrix, most of the characters believe they are living in an Utopian society. The main Protagonist, Neo, feels weirdness of his society and is contacted by the leader, Morpheus, a freedom fighter who believes Neo is the one who will destroy the dystopian society. In novella, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, the protagonists Prometheus knows there is an unnatural element in his society and commits many transgression in a form of rebellion. Prometheus chooses to fight against a life of obedience, drudgery, and fear because exploring the unknown is a life goal unlike his peers. Individuals are immersed in a dystopian society accept live in slavery because no moral principle exist, education with the use of propaganda, and lastly fear of punishment.
Firstly, citizens of a dystopian society unrecognized the true ethics.
The Anthem community causes individuals to become victims of their dictators. After men pass a certain age, the Council assigns each laborer a job. “You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you.” (Rand 22) In novella Anthem society, every single man works for their brothers. “And if you are not needed by your brother men, there is no reason for you to burden the earth with your bodies.” (Rand 22) The leader of the society treats citizen as working tool. Their human rights are not respected. Citizens struggle every single day of their life unable to argue for self rights when mistreatment is identified. People follow the government because they don’t recognize the
problem. Propaganda often uses in the colonization. During Word War 2, Japan uses propaganda to influence Korean children’s emotions, opinions, and perspective. Propaganda make easier to control people. The society in Anthem, every man goes to Home of Students. Students educate to work for their brothers. Everyday students repeat “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever.” (Rand 3) Usage of propaganda cause the society easier to control the population. Palace of Corrective Detention is one of the force that the Council uses. People fear the punishment. “They are too scared to escape from the jail. There is no reason to have guards, for men have never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be.” (Rand 24) Propaganda cause people to fear the punishment and never escape from the jail. Fear also form the dystopian society. When Prometheus is showing light ball to the scholars, scholars afraid to use invention. Scholars fear to be punish by the government, they refuse Prometheus. “The box is useless.” (Rand 73) “You shall be burned at the stake.” (Rand 72) Citizens who scared of the punishment follow the order. Except from Prometheus others accept to live a life of obedience, drudgery, and fear because they deny to acknowledge the moral principle, usage of propaganda cause every citizen of dystopian society fallow the government, and lastly citizens fearing punishment generate the Anthem society. In Matrix, Neo and other civilian doesn’t notice they are in the Matrix. Only few, a freedom fighter, knows humans are fame by robots and generate electricity inside of the pill. In the society of Anthem, children go to Home of Students learning Communist ideology. People of the society so scare of the punishment they receive after against the rules, they follow the rule. Even when they are jailed, no one tries to escape. Unaware true ethic, learn fallow the rules, and severe punishment make people of dystopian society to accept to live a life in dystopian society.
