Influence of group membership on social judgement
Traditionally, group members are bonded together by uniformity in ethnic, social and cultural traits such as language, age which enhance their stereotypic attributions and behaviors. For the reason that stereotypical characters are typical to a group, the group members are more likely to use them in social dialogues which are related to group membership.
Recent research has recognized the existence of group membership stereotype threat that transpires when group members are aware of undesirable stereotypes about themselves. As a result, the prominence of group membership impairs their social performance and judgement by generating anxiety and perceptive obsession with the negative typecast. Stereotypes affect how people take in, process, and respond to information (Berdahl & Min, 2012).
