preperation of magnesium sutfate
EXPERIMENT 4
Title: Preparation of magnesium sulphate.
Date:11.02.2010
Aim: To prepare magnesium sulphate
Theory:
Magnesium sulfate (or magnesium sulphate) is a chemical compound containing magnesium, sulfur and oxygen, with the formula MgSO4. In its hydrated form the pH is 6.0 (5.5 to 6.5). It is often encountered as the heptahydrate, MgSO4·7H2O, commonly called Epsom salt. Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is used as a drying agent. Since the anhydrous form is hygroscopic (readily absorbs water from the air) and is therefore difficult to weigh accurately, the hydrate is often preferred when preparing solutions, for example in medical preparations. Epsom salt has been traditionally used as a component of bath salts.
Procedure:
1.to the 21.08 g of the magnesium carbonate in the 250ml beaker , 50ml of hot water added to beaker to dissolve. Stirred well to dissolve the substance.
2.Hot dilute sulphuric acid added after few minute, then stirred. The mixture allow to cool. Magnesium sulphate crystallizes out. The crystal filter with filter paper, then dried.
Result:
Amount of magnesium sulphate produced- 58g -8.83g= 49.17g
Appereance of magnesium sulphate- white powder

Conclusion:
Magnesium sulphate was prepared successfully. Appearance of Magnesium sulphate is white powder. The amount of Magnesium sulphate produced is 49.17g.

Discussion:
1.How will you identify , your resulting compound as magnesium sulphate?
Solubility test -Freely soluble in water, very soluble in boiling water, and sparingly soluble in ethanol.
Test for Magnesium Solutions of magnesium salts in the presence of ammonium chloride yield no more than a slightly hazy precipitate when neutralized with ammonium carbonate TS,but on the subsequent addition of dibasic sodium phosphate TS,a white, crystalline precipitate, which is insoluble in 6Nammonium hydroxide,is formed.
Test for Sulfate
With barium chloride TS,solutions of sulfates yield a white precipitate that is

    Gravimetric Analysis

    • 2870 Words
    • 12 Pages

The main objective of this experiment was to determine the amount of sulphate by a process called gravimetric analysis. Gravimetric analysis is the quantitative isolation of a substance by precipitation and the weighing of the precipitate. In this experiment, sodium sulphate was allowed to react with barium sulphate to form a white precipitate of barium sulphate. This precipitate was then washed, filtered and dried, to ensure that there are no impurities and water molecules present, before it was being weighed. The amount of sulphate obtained was calculated to be 0.2028g and the percentage yield was calculated to be 98.8%. Due to a number of experimental errors, this value is inaccurate. The percentage yield should be less than that because of the loss of sulphate ions during the experimental procedures. However, with the presence of impurities, the weight of sulphate obtained is greater. Therefore, measures should be taken to reduce the loss of sulphate ions and accumulation of impurities.…
