I observed a child throwing a fit at the mall the other day. This child did not want to leave the store and did not want to get into her stroller. She started to throw her head back and scream very loudly. Then she would throw her arms around and kick, in an attempt to not be strapped in. The mother started to yell at her daughter to stop while trying to strap her in. After a few minutes of the child kicking and screaming she was able to strap her in. But the child continued to scream, this was when the mother decided to leave the mall. My recommendation is that instead of trying to force the child into the stroller the parent could have held the child. During my interaction with Twin 1, mom was present for modeling purposes. One of the things I enjoy about the ASQ is that we have the opportunity to model for families the importance of various interactions while playing with children. Showing that play really does give us the insight to development. Before entering the room to conduct our observation, the mother and I went through the assessment so we were able to conduct more of an authentic assessment together. We also went through the questions and explored if there were any concerns. Mom did mention that biting is something that the teachers are telling her is happening a lot in the classroom, but she feels as though since Twin1 has gained more language since coming into the older classroom – he has been in this classroom for 2 months now and the family maintains a 92% attendance rate.…
The purpose of this observation was to analysis a preschool age child between the ages of 3-5 on their social and emotional development using “California Preschool Learning Foundation Volume 1: Social and Emotional” and “Desired Results Developmental Profile – preschool.” (DRDP) The child was observed for one hour in two locations at three different settings. Child Q is a five and half year old boy, who attends Paley Early Learning Center Monday through Friday in room 3. He is tall, with dark brown hair. He is smart, friendly, and a loving child. He loves helping his teachers set up and clean the tables for breakfast and lunch. Every Monday, when I would come into the classroom, he would say “ Good, Morning Miss Julie”, and he would give me a hug. He’s favorite thing to talk about is dinosaurs; he could talk about dinosaurs for hours. He knew all the different kinds of dinosaurs and all the interesting facts about dinosaurs. Child Q, favorite dinosaur is a T-Rex. He told me that dinosaurs are awesome and he wishes dinosaurs were still alive. When the class goes outside to play in the yard, he loves to pretend that he is a dinosaur. When he grows up he wants to be a director and paleontologist.…
Tommy is sitting on the floor with his toys around him. His teacher sits on the floor next to him and he begins to hand his teacher a series of toys. He is interested in the reaction of his teacher as he hands her his blocks, one by one. Tommy leans forward, grabs a block and hands it to his teacher. He watches her face and sort of drops his mouth open as he waits for her reaction. She then tells him the letter and color on the block. He nods his head forward and then reaches for another block and proceeds to pick up another block. After picking up 5 blocks and handing them to his teacher he then crawls across the floor to a toy car and pushes it for a moment. He looks up at his teacher to see what she is doing and pushes the car toward her. He smiles at her and she smiles back and says “Is that your car?” he smiles again and nods his head forward. Tommy is very interested in his teacher’s reaction to him. She continues to watch him even when he is interested in a toy or moving away from her. He does check to see if she is pay attention to him as he plays. His teacher starts picking up toys and organizing the room and he periodically goes over to her and becomes interested in what she is doing. Tommy seems very dependent on his teachers mood. He smiles when she smiles and if she is distracted he wants to obtain her attention and seems to gauge and react to her facial expressions. Climbing should make them feel confident and many will be able to ride a tricycle. A child’s mobility progresses to an advanced level meaning they can move about freely without any help or hesitation. Moves such as catching, kicking, throwing and bouncing a ball will have developed and will encourage children to participate in simple ball games. I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old. The principle gave me a warm greeting and took me to the class and introduced me to the teachers and the children. Everyone there made me feel welcomed. I chose a place where I can sit, observe and write my note as well as to be away from children's sight. In the classroom there were five boys, two girls, and two teachers Ms. Nadia and Ms. Emma. The classroom itself was large and spacious. The classroom is very appropriate for children this age and it has many interesting areas such as a blocks and art area, and children taped some of their previous work in the art area. The color of the class is bright and has interesting posters like calendars with the name of children’s birthdays. Also. On November 6th, I observed a four year-old boy at the UCI Early Childhood Education Center. My observation starts at 4:10pm, and it lasts for thirty minutes. At the time I did the observation, all of the children woke up from the nap time and started to play outside of the classroom. The playground is at least seventy-five square feet, and it has many play stations for children. Three classrooms share the same outside playground, and the age groups of those children are from three years old to five years old. While I was observing Ms. Carrilo’s Pre-K classroom and interacting with the students, I saw that all three types of play— guided, spontaneous, and teacher directed play—was being used. After we all went inside of the classroom and settled down from being outside, half of the students went with the teacher assistant to the work area and half of the students stayed with the mentor teacher, Ms. Carrilo, at the carpet/block area. Ms. Carrilo said that she wanted one of the UTSA students to stay with her and the other UTSA student to go with the teacher assistant.
