Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data This chapter includes discussion on the presentation, analysis and interpretation of data obtained in the physical, chemical, and biological test.
1. Extraction and Isolation of Tannins
An extraction and isolation was conducted by the researchers to determine and calculate the amount of tannins from the Otaheite Gooseberry leaves. The results are the following:
Table 1
Result of the Extraction and Isolation of Tannins
Weight of the sample 170.51 g
Weight of evaporation dish 45.40 g
Weight of the Evaporating dish + extract 73.75 g
% yield weight of Tannins 16.63 %
The isolated Tannins from Otaheite Gooseberry leaves obtained a percentage yield of 16.63%coming from the weight of the sample which is 170.51 g.
2. Physical Properties of Tannins
2.1 Organoleptic Test
An organoleptic test was conducted by the researchers to determine the appearance, color, and odor of tannins from Otaheite Gooseberry leaves.
Tables 2
Result of the Organoleptic Test
Appearance Viscous
Color Dark brown
Odor Unpleasant
The table 2 shows the result of the organolepitc test conducted using Otaheite Gooseberry leaves wherein, the appearance is viscous, with a unpleasant odor and a dark brown color.
2.2 Solubility Test
An solubility test was conducted by the researchers to determine the solvent wherein the tannins can be best dissolved using Distilled water, Alcohol, Ether and Acetone.
Table 3
Results of Solubility test
Distilled water Soluble
Alcohol Insoluble
Ether Insoluble
Acetone Insoluble
The table 3 shows the result of solubility test conducted using Otaheitte Gooseberry leaves. Tannins are soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol, ether and acetone (organic solvents).
2.3 Melting Point
