Built in 1923 as a coal-powered operation, the High Bridge plant, along with Riverside in Minneapolis, once formed the hub of Northern States Power Company, a predecessor to Xcel Energy. The original plant was replaced with a new natural gas fired generating facility starting in 2005 as part of Xcel Energy's Metro Emission Reduction Project. The coal-fired plant was retired in 2007 and the new facility came on line in May 2008. (High Bridge Generating Station)…

    Case Study Du Pont Freon

    • 1796 Words

The Du Pont Freon Products Division’s main business is production and sale of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are mainly used in refrigeration equipment and air conditioning systems. In 1987, the division accounted for two percent of Du Pont’s revenue and employed 1200 people. Starting in the early 70s, concerns have been expressed that CFCs contribute to and might cause the depletion of the ozone layer. In 1988, however, the first hard evidence was published proving that CFC causes the ozone layer to deplete. This contribution to the depletion is, according to the evidence, widespread and more severe than originally believed. In face of the new evidence, Joe Glas, CEO of Du Pont Freon Products Division needs to decide what the future of the companies CFC business is going to be. In order to derive the decision, this essay will first look at Du Pont’s Strategy regarding the CFC business from 1974 to 1986 and afterwards consider the impacts of the Montreal Protocol and the Trends Panel Protocol.…

The United States is the worlds largest producer of nuclear power, accounting for more than 30 percent of the worldwide nuclear generation of electricity. Nuclear power is also among the verge of the most expensive, construction on a new power plant in Georgia skyrocketed past the projected expenses by $737 million to nearly $7 billion. In 2012 the approval of the new power plants in Georgia and South Carolina were among the first approved in over 30 years. While these approvals were a major setback for consumers, U.S. PIRG are not giving up. The United States has 99 nuclear power reactors in 30 states, operated by 30 different power companies. Since 2001 these plants have achieved an average capacity factor of over 90%, generating up to…

Abstract: This paper started with a literature survey of development the supercritical flow reactor core design, various coolant flow path designs were discussed: conventional one-pass flow arrangement, two-pass and the three-pass coolant flow geometry. A simple 1-D model was developed for the one-pass and two-pass flow design to find the maximum flow bulk temperature and case temperature in the fuel assembly. In the implementation of the model, an accurate prediction of heat transfer coefficient was vital, which was also much complicated for the supercritical flow since the flow property changed substantially at the pseudo-critical region. Study showed that classical Dittus-Bolter correlation disagreed with the experimental results significantly. The in-house CFD code, NPHASE-CMFD, was implemented on 1-D supercritical water reactor to simulate the bulk flow and case temperature distribution in the supercritical water reactor, which provided useful guidance of supercritical water reactor design from engineering purpose.…

    Steam Power

A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Using boiling water to produce motion goes back about 2000 years, but early devices were not practical. Since the late 1700’s steam engines have become a major source of mechanical power. The first steam-powered devices were used to pump water out of mines. In 1781, James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. These engines enabled a wide range of manufacturing machinery to be powered. These engines could be sited anywhere that water, coal or wood fuel could be obtained. Steam engines could also be applied to vehicle such as traction engines and railway locomotives. The stationary steam engine was an important part of the Industrial Revolution which lasted from the late 1700’s to the early and mid 1800’s. (Wikipedia)…
