President Abraham Lincoln's 'Our American Cousin'
Over 150 years ago, on April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union, effectively ending the American Civil War. The streets were lined with celebration for days, even though the war had not officially ended. Union supporters were rejoicing, and Confederate supporters were mourning. But one man decided he had enough of this. “While attending a special performance of the comedy, ‘Our American Cousin,’ President Abraham Lincoln was shot,” (Government) leading the nation on a 12 day manhunt that would change the course of American History.
John Wilkes Booth had learned of Lincoln’s plan to attend “Our American Cousin,” and came up with a plan to murder President Abraham Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State

The laughter had covered the sound so well, some people did not hear it, and some thought it was all part of the play. Major Henry Rathbone heard the gunshot and saw Booth standing behind Lincoln’s drooped, but not dead, body. Rathbone grabbed Booth, but he broke free and attacked. He raised his knife and swung, but Rathbone raised his arm to protect himself, and the knife caused a deep wound. Booth knew he had to escape, and tried to jump over the balcony, but got caught on one of the flags. “He freed himself, and landed off-balance, feeling something wrong near his left ankle.” (Swanson, 43) He went to the center of the stage, and shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis!” The phrase he shouted means, “This always to tyrants!” Booth then pushed his way backstage. Only one man tried to stop him, Army Major Joseph Stewart. He was being chased by Stewart until Booth ran outside behind the theater, got onto his horse, and galloped …show more content…
Seward was recovering from a carriage accident. He was stuck in bed until he had recovered. Lewis Powell and David Herold were watching the house from outside. There were no guards in sight. Because Seward was bedridden, this was the perfect time to strike. They were to kill him with pistol fire and a knife if needed. But there were problems: First he had to get into the house. For this, he came up with a plan: To pretend he was a doctor delivering medicine. Second, how would he find the Secretary? He would have to find Seward in a three-story mansion without knowing what the interior looked like. Third, he had absolutely no idea how many people were in the house, maybe even a dozen. Also, David Herold did not want to go in the house. He would only wait outside holding their horses, not wanting to kill anybody. As they watched, all the doctors left, and the lights went dim. Powell approached the

Francis Blair’s talk with Jefferson Davis did yield a Confederate three-man peace delegate. However, the movie fails to mention a scheme, formulated by Blair during the talk, whereby the Union and Confederacy would declare an armistice and send a joint army to overthrow a French regime in Mexico. When Lincoln and William Seward met with the Confederate delegation at the Hampton Roads conference, the Confederates were under the impression that a deal could be made using the Blair scheme. Instead the movie portrays Lincoln simply telling the delegation to expect the 13th amendment to soon become part of the Constitution completely bypassing any side mentioning the Blair scheme.…

He describes the conspiracy as if he was there and almost puts you in the midst of every conversation and every decision made. John Wilkes Booth first decided to get rid of Abraham Lincoln the day after the presidential election of 1864. The author describes Booth as a strong man and somewhat smart. He was emotionally immature but very prideful in his own ways. Booth was a southerner by choice and decided to contribute to the confederacy in a big way. He first decided to capture Lincoln. The author says he had no fear for life. After Booth thought up his schemes, he finally decided upon one. He tested it and perfected his attack. He got his conspirators together and they talked and planned it out. They even had alternative options in case they needed to change any of their plans. The author has such small descriptions of every day and what people did, you can get lost in this book. The author goes through every hour before and after the assassination of Lincoln. He speaks about who talked to who, who ate and drank what, what they were doing, what time they went, etc…It gets somewhat overwhelming to interpret what the author is saying because he…

According to Richard Palmes, he asked the Captain if he intended to fire to which he replied "by no means" (Wheeler and Becker, 86). Another witness, William Wyatt, who was also very close to the disturbance, alleged that the mob was yelling fire and Captain Preston did reprimand his men for firing without his orders (Wheeler and Becker, 83). James Woodall confirmed that a stick causing the soldier to instantaneously fire struck a soldier. He ascertained that the Captain did not give the order to fire (Wheeler and Becker, 88). Consistent with all the testimonies, Edward Hill observed the Captain ordering one of his soldiers to put away his gun stating that he "have done mischief enough" (Wheeler and Becker,…

Very outstanding and influential, Abraham Lincoln had a divine gift of leadership, which he adequately exploited in the nation’s politic issues. Like every great leader, Lincoln comprehended people-characters, talents, desires, etc., in a distinct way, so he was able to communicate with people who supported him or even opposed him successfully and let them function in the nation. Elected to be the President of the United States, Lincoln started constructing his cabinet on his election night. Surprised to many people, Lincoln offered William Seward, a strong-minded republican who had been his main political rival, the position of the Secretary of State because Seward was radical on slavery issue and later considered as a centrist, one who supported…

Mary Surratt, John Surratt jr.'s mother, also helped Booth by allowing him to use her boarding house as a meeting place, even though John soon left the group. Also recruited were David Herold, a drugstore clerk(Roscoe 56); George A. Atzerodt, a carriage repair man from Germany (Hanchett 49)and Lewis Powell, who was in the Confederate army.(Holzer “The president is shot” 67)The general plan Booth created was to capture the president and then take him across the Potomac river to Richmond, Virginia(Hanchett 43). Once he held the president captive, he could then demand the release of all the Confederate soldiers held by the Union.(Holzer “The president is shot” 71) Booth knew that if he could accomplish this he would be a hero for the Confederacy, possibly the reason for their victory, and by doing something so unheard of, he would be placed in history. He did not want to just kidnap the president, though, he wanted to do something to be remembered as bold and daring.…
