RY 2013-2014

August 8, 2013 was a significant day for ten (10) students of T. Alonzo Elementary School as they are blessed with an intangible gift from IPP Morris Agoncillo who gave ten (10) SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS for the Academic Year 2013-2014. This is the 3rd year of providing CASH GIFTS of P5, 000 per student to sustain some of their school needs. At 8AM to 10AM, a short program was prepared by our adopted school headed by Principal Annabelle Tingzon and witnessed by their faculty members and around 200 students. IPP Morris delivered an inspirational message to the students on how he became a successful professional. And the happiest persons present during the awarding of scholarship grants are the beloved parents of the scholars. This valuable project of RCLH was made possible through the RAMIRO AGONCILLO FOUNDATION INC.

In the afternoon from 1PM to 3PM, I was the Guest of Honor and Inducting Officer during the Induction of the Parents-Teachers Association and the Supreme Pupil Government for the Academic Year 2013-2014 of T. Alonzo Elementary School. I admonished the officers on how to be a good leader in order to effectively implement their planned programs and projects of their respective organizations.

On the same day was our 7th Regular Meeting which was still held at MY PLACE Building. For the first time since I assumed my post, we had a GUEST OF HONOR and RESOURCE SPEAKER, PCSUPT RICHARD A. ALBANO, District Director of Quezon City Police District. Director Albano bared his plans and programs to improve the delivery of services to the constituents of Quezon City particularly on effective implementation of PEACE and ORDER in his area of responsibility. Director Albano rose from the ranks and promoted thirty six (36) times before he was appointed by President PNOY as District Director, a rank equivalent to Brigadier General on JUNE 2013. Director Albano is also a bemedalled Police Officer. He

I found the article “The Information” by Adam Gopnik to be a difficult read. The information seemed to jump around and was very difficult to follow. While I understood the point Gopnik was making I couldn’t dive into the information like I wanted to. I wasn’t rally sure of Gopnik’s view on the subject, is he an Ever-Waser? What does, it’s not about the toast but the butter really mean? Is Gopnik trying to say that it’s not about the new technology but how we use it?…

Every Friday during the semester, I made my way to an elementary school to participate with the Adopt-A-School program; which was apart of an educational initiative for my sorority. The mission of the Adopt-A-School program represents a tremendous opportunity to positively affect the lives of students, teachers, and volunteers. My chapter chose to adopt Berg Jones Elementary School in Monroe, Louisiana. This was an inner city school that ranged from Pre-K to grade 5, and included about 500 students. Through my two years of volunteering, I was rewarded with such a gratifying experience as well as some encouragement of what I wanted to do as a career in the future.…

(November 18, 1928 – January 27, 2004), also known as Doy Laurel, was Vice President of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992 under Corazon Aquino. Before that, he briefly served as Aquino's first (and only) Prime Minister from February 25 to March 25 of 1986. He was a foremost leader of the United Nationalist Democratic Organization (UNIDO), the political party that toppled the Marcos dictatorship and restored democracy to the Philippines during the People Power Revolution of 1986. Laurel is the fifth son of President José P. Laurel, president of the second Philippine Republic. He was born to a family whose illustrious lineage spans generations of nationalists who distinguished themselves as public servants. His grandfather, Judge Sotero Remoquillo Laurel was a delegate to the Malolos Congress and Secretary of the Interior in the first Philippine Revolutionary government under President Emilio Aguinaldo. He first enrolled at Centro Escolar de Señoritas (1933–35) then Paco Elementary School (1935–36) followed by Justo Lukban Elementary School (1936–1937) and he graduated from elementary at Ateneo de Manila in 1941. He graduated from high school at De La Salle College High School in 1946.Doy’s father wanted him to experience a public school education so he enrolled him first in the Paco Elementary School (1935–36) and then the Justo Lukban Elementary School (1936–37). In June 1937 he was admitted to the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila Grade School. During the Japanese occupation Ateneo de Manila was closed down by the Japanese for the reason that it was run by Americans. This prompted Laurel to enroll in De La Salle High School also located in Manila. On September 27, 1941, on his first year in high school, he received 2nd honors with a general average of 93.4. Barely three months later had his studies come to an abrupt halt with the outbreak of World War II on…

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines dynasty as a powerful group or family that maintains its position for a considerable time. In the Philippines, according to a research by the Center for People Empowerment and Governance, we have about 250 political families who have dominated Philippine politics at the national and local level. This is 0.00001667 % of the country's 15 million families (CENPEG, 2007). They comprise a little, among the represented Filipinos in the country, whom majority are not as elite and as wealthy as they are, and whose interests and needs are not the same as theirs. Roland G. Simbulan, a notable political scientist of the University of the Philippines, says: “Political dynasties distort governance, and make a sham of democratic governance. Through these, public office becomes an exclusive family franchise, and a provider of more benefits to family interests” (20). Political dynasties in the country should be banned for it does not benefit the people and the state; it only benefits those in power. They shut opportunities and hinder true services by the more deserving leaders who are not fortunate to win against these ruling families in the elections. This violates Sec. 26 Art. II of the 1987 Constitution which states: “The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service, and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.” Unfortunately, no law supports this yet. Since 1987, a lot of legislators have tried to pass a law to abolish political dynasties but have failed. This is mainly because most lawmakers come from political dynasties. Thus Simbulan is right when he said that, “Wealthy and powerful families have dominated politics in the Philippines, concentrating power to the elite families, promoting corruption and abuse of power” (7).…
