At the same time, Wright met Mamah Borthwick Cheney and the two instantly fell in love. Wright wanted a divorce from Catherine, however this was not the first time he grew attached to someone, thus she refused. As a result, Wright and Cheney abandoned their spouses and children to meet each other in Europe. While living in Europe with Cheney, Catherine still refused to divorce Wright. Once Wright came back to the States, he convinced his mother to buy land that was adjacent to the Lloyd-Joneses land. Wright designed and constructed a house on that land where he, Cheney, and her children lived. Unfortunately, a male servant set fire to the living quarters which killed seven people including Cheney and her family. After thirty-three years of marriage and Cheney’s death, Catherine and Wright divorced. One year later, Wright married Maude Noel. Their relationship was known for being rocky because of Noel’s addiction to morphine. They divorced and four years later Wright married his third wife, Olga Ivanovna. In total, Wright have eight children, three daughters, four sons, and he adopted his third wife’s daughter, Svetlana
