1. “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in wants of a wife” Chapter 1 | During the time period that this book takes place, this quote could be proven true. At this time, there were arranged marriages based on a mans place in society and his fortune. Today, people get married because they are in love. Some people may marry others based on their financial standings but there are many wealthy people, my aunt for example, who have no desire to rush into marriage. | 2. A young man, Mr. Bingley, has arrived in town. He is wealthy and successful. Parents dream of their daughters finding a husband like him. Throughout the beginning of the book, Mrs. Bennet tries to impress Mr. Bingley with her daughters so he may find one of them a desirable wife, specifically her daughter Jane. Chapter 1 | This shows the difference in society between then and now. During the time this book takes place, women didn't have obligations in society other than finding a good husband. Now a days, parents don't care about their daughters getting married as much as they care about them getting a good education and being successful in life. | 3. In the book, Jane Austen shows opposition of characters between Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. Chapter 4 | Mr. Darcy is arrogant, reserved, fastidious, and has manners that weren't very inviting. Mr. Bingley is a gentleman with a pleasant countenance and admirable manners. | 4. “..but I can guess how it was; everybody says that he is ate up with pride” - talking about Mr. Darcy. Chapter 5 | This quote explains how people view Mr. Darcy; his attitude makes people believe he is very stuck up and conceited. | 5.
