Over the years, an estimate of 4000 languages die yearly. The main cause of this is the need for schools to teach English as a second language, indulging the idea of children learning another language causes the slowly dying out them speaking their native tongue.
Language Death can manifest in various ways, like learning a new language and using it more than you use your native language, meaning that they can eventually lose their native language. Imperialism has led to many considerable debates about whether it is a good thing or bad.
In my opinion, there are pro’s and con’s , the pro’s would include that learning english will make it easier for students in the future to get a job, as they can work in different places in the world and broaden their horizon. Learning English can also improve efficiency around the world.
The con’s would be the loss of thousands of languages yearly, the most common conclusion to language death would be when a community of one language speakers becomes bilingual in another language, gradually shifting to their second language, until they stop using their native language. This usually is forced upon, as their are many schools that believe that English as a second language should be compulsory.
I think that overall, there are millions of bilingual children, which I believe is a huge advantage to their future’s, gradually many countries all over the world are being forced to learn english. I don’t think we should worry too much about the loss of languages, I believe that it would be an advantage as well if the whole world all spoke the same language to an extent. When English is taught in schools, they should be taught by a native speaker and should be taught at a later stage, so that their native language can be preserved as well.
