Famous boxer James J. Braddock (Russell Crow) looks over his defeated opponent as fans cheer on another victory. This 2005 film produced by Brian Grazer and directed by Ron Howard tells the story of a dedicated man struggling to get by during the Great Depression. Cinderella Man begins on November 30, 1928, with a 2nd round knockout over Tuffy Griffith. Shortly after the fight, Braddock returns home to his spouse Mae Braddock (Renée Zellweger) with his winnings. As Braddock prepares for an easy night’s rest, the era transitions to four years later in urban New York City during the midst of the Great Depression. Braddock tries to continue his boxing career but fans soon become bored after he breaks his hand during a match and is unable to land hard punches. Still needing to find a way to feed his family Braddock tries to find job shifts at a dockyard, however, the odds of being chosen are already slim, and even more so for a man with a broken hand. With dwindling work, hungry children, no electricity and a child with a high fever, Mrs. Braddock has no choice but to send the kids to stay with family. Jobless Braddock is forced to get help from the Emergency Relief Administration and goes back to Madison Square Garden, humbling himself by asking old comrades for spare change to bring his kids back home. His luck turns, however, when his boxing manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti) schedules a last minute fight for Jim to replace an injured fighter against Corn Griffin. It’s predicted that the fight is to be an easy knockout for Heavyweight Champion contender, Griffin, but Braddock makes a surprising comeback with a technical knockout in the 3rd round. Braddock is able to get more shifts at the dockyard with recognition of his upset. Meanwhile, Gould is able to talk the boxing commissioner into scheduling another fight for Braddock. Mrs. Braddock doesn’t agree with the potential danger of the brutal sport,…

The truth I discovered in The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, was based on love. The truth was a reality that many choose not to fulfill or live out, because of possibly discovering something new or different from what one was familiar to. William Goldman ends the book with a few strong sentences about love, and that “life is not fair, it’s just fairer than death” (358). And I saw truth in that sentence, because he was accepting the truth in life for what it was, and what it may be for many people. The truth to love and life is not a fairytale, or a story with a happy ending, but is based on accepting what is real and honest.…

I chose to do my audience analysis on Philippa Gregory’s books The White Princess. The book is a historical fiction book based on the lives of King Henry the 7th and Elizabeth of York. The primary audience for this book is for people who are interesting about the history and the people of the British monarchy. The reason that I believe that this is the primary audience for this book is because most people do not want to learn about Elizabeth of York unless they are interested in her and her life. Another reason that I think that this is the primary audience is because this book follows the history and issues that were going on during that time. People that would want to read this book are people that are interested about the royals back then and what happened in their lives and the issue and threats that they were facing at the time. For example, the book talks about how King Henry the 7th had issues with people pretending to be one Elizabeth’s brothers who were killed in the tower. A few young men came forward during that time and pretended that they were one of the brothers…

I relate to the character Park Sheridan in the book Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell because he is considered weird and is an outsider. He isn't crazy about sports, parties, dating and he’s popular enough not to get picked on and different enough not to fit in, just like yours truly. We first meet Park when Eleanor is boarding the bus to school. He’s sitting all alone listening to his walkman, while Eleanor gets pushed around by Tina and Steve. He tries to ignore the situation but eventually saves the day when he’s had enough of the raucous (Rowell 9). Just like him I would try and avoid the situation but eventually do something. To Park, fitting in does not matter anymore and like him, I do not fit…

Lies are easy to start but hard to stop. Once one lie is told, the odds of having to tell another lie to back up the first one and so on is practically inevitable. The Princess and the Puma is a story about a man, Ripley Givens, working on Espinosa Ranch who wants to marry the princess, Josefa O’Donnell, but decides to be deceitful in doing so. Ripley Givens is a perfect example of when someone resorts to lying as a way to impress somebody else, they turn out looking like fools in their web of lies when caught in the end.…

In “The Lady’s Maid,” by Katherine Mansfield, the narrator and maid is named Ellen. (Name similarity?) She, much like Cinderella, is loyal and quiet in performing her daily duties. Ellen is also searching for something to complete her life. But several incidents in Ellen’s life contribute to her un-Cinderella-like ending, including the fact that she does not have a mythical figure to help her out. These scenes, which are shown through Ellen’s responses to interactions with characters around her, prove Ellen to be a very complex character. Both Ellen and Cinderella experience sadness from childhood experiences and devotion to the ladies that they serve, but whereas Cinderella overcomes her problems in the end and finds happiness, Ellen carries her emotions so deeply that she cannot break free from her enslaved life.…
