Having your daughter obsess over a disney princess is not a problem because it gives her someone to idolize. Princesses are seen as beautiful, compassionate, and intelligent. They represent idealistic qualities for little girls to have. For example, Princess Jasmine is an excellent role model for girls because she is independent and not afraid to voice her opinion. She repeatedly states how she does not need a man to to make her happy because she is capable of enjoying life and ruling her kingdom on her own. The purity myth occurs without us realizing it. Girls are suppose to fit society’s standard of looking beautiful/sexy but once they do sexual acts, they are criticized for it. For example, at the start of her career, Britney Spears was a proud virgin. She broadcasted it wanting others to stay pure as well. In order to please the public, Britney posed in sexy outfits for magazines. Nonetheless, she continued to say how she is not a sex object, and she was not that type of girl. Society was okay with it because she was too innocent to understand what her actions meant. However when Britney took responsibility for her actions, the world turned against her calling her names such as “slut”. While Britney is famous, the same dilemma occurs with ordinary girls. Many people believe this idea which is why the “virginity movement’’ is promoted. While, people believe that this movement is beneficial for young adults because it decreases the chances of teen pregnancy, sexual transmitted diseases, and retains their “innocence”. However, instead of it being optional for young adults, it is forced. For example, one of the big events that promote the purity myth are purity balls. At a purity ball, daughters pledge to their fathers that they will not lose their virginity until marriage. Their fathers, are the keepers of their virginity, swearing to protect their little girl from men. However, most girls are not given the choice of wanting to pledge their virginity or not because their dads are making them to do it. For this ball, girls wear their best dress and get their hair and makeup done; even girls as young as six years old are covered with makeup and wear revealing dresses. Girls are seen as objects and displaying their virginity at a ball emphasizes this idea.
