In addition, this case also brings forth the question of how early in their academic career should children be exposed to these types of tests. These tests were implemented to prepare students for their future middle school and high school careers. However, the role of elementary school is not limited to just preparing children academically, but it is also for nurturing social skills needed for students to communicate with their peers and helping children build confidence and esteem. These kind of standardized tests that were taken at Resembool may prioritize the role of academically preparing the students while sacrificing or demeaning other essential roles that elementary schooling must play.…

I will admit that at the beginning of this assignment I felt it was pointless to unwrap the standards when I could simply read them. Through the process of unwrapping the first standard it became apparent that there were many more details and processes that I needed to know in order to prepare my self for becoming a principal. I feel more assured that I am on the right track because I have or agree with most of the traits that I have read thus far. I understand that learning about the areas where I am weak and applying that knowledge will only lead to my personal growth and make me a better leader in the…

Since the beginning of the 20th century some form of high stakes standardized testing has existed in the United States. Test use has ranged from determining acceptance or rejection of an immigrant to enter the U.S. to declaring a citizen competent to enter the military. So, for nearly a century, high stakes testing has had significant rewards and consequences associated with it. Standardized testing of student comprehension and competency has long been involved with K-12 education, but has lacked the association with high stakes. In 1983, the National Commission on Education released "A Nation At Risk", "which called for an end to the minimum competency testing movement and beginning of high stakes testing movement that would raise the nation's standards of achievement drastically". Many times these high stakes tests determine whether a student advances to the next grade level or even graduates high school. The American Psychological Association (APA) states that the potential problem with current increased emphasis on high stakes testing is not necessarily the test per se, but the instances when tests have unintended and potentially negative consequences for individual students, groups of students, or the…

Standardized testing has been embedded in children from the time they first enter kindergarten all the way through grade school and high school years and finally ending in college and graduate school. It has become so frequent that it is no longer questioned why these tests are necessary, and by the time a person is finally through with school, they have taken an average of twenty to twenty-two tests. Although countless generations of Americans have had to sit through these tests, never have they played such a prominent role in schooling. Usually these exams were used to administer a child’s performance in the classroom and what he or she has learned so far, along with where…
