Principles Marketing McDonalds Case Analysis
The very first McDonalds restaurant was opened in Plaines, Illinois in 1955. In 1954 Ray Kroc approached the McDonalds brothers with the thought of starting a new company. In 1965 McDonalds went public, some twenty years later in 1985 it was added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. McDonalds has gone through quite a bit of changes through the years exposing of several CEO’s, but found its man in 2004 in Jim Skinner. He has made a recovery in the business as he joined when the company took its first quarterly loss. Revenue rose to neraly11% during 2006 and the net profits also climbed. The profits climbed because the new CEO focused on customer service, changing the menu to customers change in tastes for food, and the structural look of his restaurants and modernizing them.
The manager of a McDonalds believes she has a problem because of a special that has drawn in a lot of senior citizens. She wants to keep the restaurant a friendly and safe place, several of the employees have grown relationships with the seniors that go in their every day. The amount of senior customers that come in during the morning hours until mid-afternoon have increased causing a large crowd of senior citizens in the restaurant at once, some staying for several hours. She is worried that due to the growth of customers of a certain age and the only time frame they go into the restaurant it may deter younger crowds of people from going into her restaurant. She also worries that families and such won’t go to the restaurant if they see how busy it is inside and the customer service of her employees lacks due to the crowd.

Strengths: Although the crowd is largely made up of senior citizens it does bring in a lot of business for her restaurant, this is something the CEO is striving for. Seniors clean up after themselves, they don’t leave a mess as families or young adults would be more likely to do. Majority of the seniors leave before the afternoon rush, this frees up space in the

    A main issue is addressing the concerns older and current members might have in regards to the proposed changes; older membership may be already currently satisfied with the operations and facilities of the country club and see no reason to implement changes. They may see change as a threat or an inconvenience to ending the old way of conducting business rather than as an opportunity to increase socializing and family oriented entertainment. This concern actually addressed a deeper issue the country club was facing: the potential deterioration of the golfing and dining services they were supposedly specialized in. This was pointed out through the findings of the McMahon's study where there were major concerns about the speed of service, the professionalism of the wait staff and the variety of menu items for their dining facility, the 37th hole. Since, the dining portion of the country club is currently half of their entertainment program, any flaws within the dining experience will be detrimental for the country club, in the perception of not only attracting new members, but also maintaining their current members. Management should look into the operations of the wait staff and seek out strategies to increase a favorable outlook from the members in this dimension. Some questions management should pose to evaluate the effectiveness of the dining facility should be: are the servers properly trained to handle customer service related issues?; are the dining halls up to health standards and do they make the members feel comfortable?; etc. Some of these basic lines of questioning can lead to more effective evaluation to ensure the dining experience of the club is up to par.
