In this passage, there are plenty of guiding principles, but there are two that are really good. These two are optimism and honesty. Optimism is looking at the good side of things, and honesty is just simply just telling the truth.
The first guiding principle is honesty. Benjamin Franklin uses this in his passage as he is talking about him looking like a wreck in front of his soon to be wife, and her father. In the passage he states “.. and I thought I made, as I certainly did, a most awkward, ridiculous appearance.” As he says that he is dripping wet, and looks like a walking mud pile.
