This principle states that the decisions shall be made in a manner that make it possible for the concerned people to become autonomous. This means that the decisions shall aid them in developing an ability to make decisions that are associated with them. This shows that the people shall have the maximum level of control over their lives because they are the only ones with the maximum level of information on the type of lives that they wish to spend. This principle is based on the aspect of respecting each and every individual of the society and providing them with the liberty to select the course of their lives and have a say in the most important matters that are associated with their lives.     Autonomy is the personal rule of the self that is free from both controlling interference by others, and from personal limitations that prevent meaningful choice. Autonomous individuals act intentionally, with understanding, and without controlling influence. The word autonomy can have many applications in various areas of study. If we speak of autonomy in the context of the medical profession, matters like; the patients’ rights, informed consent, and taboo subjects such as euthanasia and abortions are brought up. With acts such as the Freedom Of Choice Act, which eliminates restrictions on abortion nationwide, are passed and the government takes tighter control of physicians, physicians will be forced to perform or refer for abortions, provide contraception, offer euthanasia, and other things that might go against that doctors own moral and ethical compass. The right of patients to make decisions about their medical care without their health care provider trying to influence the decision is called patient autonomy. Patient autonomy does allow for health care providers to educate the patient, but does not allow the health care provider to make the decision for the patient. In medicine respect for a patient's personal autonomy is one of many fundamental ethical principles being weighted heavily against beneficence. Autonomy can be defined as the ability of the person to make his or her own decisions. In order to exercise the right of autonomy a patient must first posses the capacity to make decisions. In day-to-day practice doctors might often speak of the competent patient. This means the patient has been educated of all known possible outcomes, is not under the influence of any mind altering substance, and has the mental capacity to understand their decision or the subject of discussion.…

    The source given discusses the prominence of the commonly debatable topic of individual rights and freedoms being neglected to fulfill the goals of the state. The source is clearly biased and against modern liberalism; in favor of a more collective society focusing more on the survival and prosperity of the state, rather than individual rights and freedoms. The source evidently identifies collectivism as well as authoritarianism as its most prominent ideological perspectives. If this source was a legitimate society in today’s world it would undoubtedly reject the natural rights of individuals as well as rule of law, egalitarianism along with the general will of the people. This can be most strongly supported by the following sentence stating, “The individual must serve the interests of a state.” The evidence taken from the source depicts a very strong presence of an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization. This type of a society most commonly resembles the life in the medieval period, where everything and anything was used to benefit the state before benefitting its people, due to the divine right of the kings, which left no room for individual worth. The source states “Individual rights and freedoms are less important that the survival and prosperity of the state”, this is an excellent example of the thinking of the early English philosopher Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679). Hobbes believed that people are motivated by selfishness and greed, to avoid disorder and turmoil; he thought people should give up their freedom to a government that will ensure order, which this government would be strong and able to suppress rebellion. The thinking of Thomas Hobbes and the source, both disagree with liberalism.
