Establishment:
The PC was established in 1991 to undertake Privatization of public sector entities. On September 28, 2000, in order to strengthen the PC’s legal authority as a corporate body for implementing the government’s privatization policy; the Government promulgated the Privatization Commission Ordinance 2000. This legal framework increased PC’s independence and accountability and has provided greater comfort to investors. The overall Government policy of strengthening the private sector’s role in the endowment of goods and services and with the approval of Cabinet, the Privatization Commission (PC) is entrusted with the task of privatization of federal government assets – such as its shares in banks, industrial units, public utilities, oil, gas and transport companies, and infrastructure service providers . In addition to the sale of shares or assets, it may offer concessions or the right to operate publicly owned assets.
PRIVATIZATION OF PTCL:
Introduction:
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is the largest telecommunication company in Pakistan. The company provides telephony services nation-wide and is the backbone for country's telecommunication infrastructure despite arrival of a dozen other telecommunication companies, including giants like Telenor and China Mobile.
The company operates around 2000 telephone exchanges across the country, providing the largest fixed line network. Data and backbone services such as GSM, CDMA, Broadband Internet, IPTV, wholesale are an increasing part of its business
