During this video, I became more and more frustrated. I have briefly understood what white privilege was growing up, but I had never heard it in this detail before. I could not believe that this was how this came about. I was shocked to find out that it started only briefly slavery came about. I thought that once the African Americans came here to the…

In America, privileged is something we see every day whether it is gender, sexuality, age, socioeconomics, or religion. Tim Wise documentary on White Privilege discuss inequality of race between blacks and whites. In this paper I will discuss other privilege beside raced that are enjoyed by a preferred category. People of a particular category are in denial of privilege, such as rich people feel people of poverty put themselves in that predicament. Rich people feel there should be no government assistance that includes: public housing, food stamps, federal grants, and Medicare. In America women are paid 79 percent of what men make. I notice that women are chosen more for teaching and secretarial jobs while men get chosen for manual labor jobs.…
She uses a series of questions to prove how privilege matters in everyday society. Are you “heterosexual” then you’re privileged. Nope, are you “comfortable with the gender you are ?” Privileged ! If you are white, everyone already knows the answer. Daum shows how ridiculous the claims are becoming. Daum gains authenticity by showing people’s claims to the extreme. Privilege is normal in a regular sense, but now used as a “weapon waved”. Instead of privilege from a comparison view, it’s “weaponized” She shows how privilege revolves factors like race, status, and gender. Thus, anyone can be privileged. Privilege does not have to be a person’s assets , but reach anyone to some degree. Most humans have a brain that allows thinking. Are we not all privileged…
These White Privilege readings engage popular culture by defining white privilege through concrete evidence. Texts such as “White Privilege: Unpacking the Knapsack” ask the reader is to view a list of items that define white privilege. The reader is then asked to confirm whether or not the privileges are applicable to how he or she lives. As most white people realize just how applicable white privileges are to them, they can see that the problem is not just skin deep. The privileges white people have today are because of the white privileges available throughout history. In “The History of White People” the author unveils that most of what we study is a white man’s version of history, and therefore discredits other race’s contribution to history.…
Peggy McIntosh is an American feminist and she is also an anti-racist activist of The United States of America. Peggy McIntosh is also the associate director of the Wellesley Centers for Women, a speaker and the founder and co-director of the National S.E.E.D. Project on Inclusive Curriculum which is basically the seeking of educational equity and diversity. Peggy McIntosh’s area of expertise is feminism and racism. She deals with equality in society and political world for women. She fights for the equal rights of women as the same rights as men. She also expertizes in the field of racism. According to Peggy McIntosh, whites are taught not to recognize the white privileges and that is why she started to ask what it was like to have these white privileges in life and then she started to write this article on her personal observations and experiences. The article, “White privilege and male privilege” is based on Peggy McIntosh’s daily experience within a particular circumstance.…
For many decades racism has become a major issue that has affected many people in negative ways. Many people may not realize the notion of racism and how big of a problem it is within our society today, because of the assumptions that we make on each other. From previous generations, to now racism has affected whites and blacks in many ways. Many ways such as income, jobs, crime rates, education and more. Privileges towards whites has affected blacks in many ways. Within society today whites are showered more with many privileges than what blacks are. In the following paper I will argue the invisibility amongst blacks and how the visibility of whites is always spoken upon society. Privilege is important because it shows the positive advantages…
In essence, it’s a simple concept: white privilege refers to the both minor and significant advantages that white people have in today’s American society. To be honest reading this article was a huge eye opener for me. I still struggle with both believing that white privilege exists and figuring out how to get rid of it. I have never felt that I was privileged to be white, however, I suppose that could be because as McIntosh states “whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privilege”…
The silencing effect is the act of suppressing knowledge that a rape on a college or university campus. This phenomenon intends to protect the university rather than supporting the victims of a sexual assault. Universities and colleges are intending to protect their collegiate brand so that rape statistics are low or are non-existent. The silencing effect is related to the profitability of universities because, in the eyes of potential applicants to the college, they see no negative accounts related to sexual assault. This of course would be pleasing to a student who is debating about applying to the university. Thus, the university will gain more applicants, which will increase the student population and gain more popularity over schools with a big rape rate. According to the video, rape occurs at every college, but forty-five percent of colleges have no records of rape. This is occurring because administrators and police are not doing enough to help the victim, but rather are saving the school’s name.…

There are four major defenses which can be relied upon defamation, justification, fair comment, absolute privilege; and qualified privilege. (Discuss) Qualified privilege, this exists for the same fundamental purpose as absolute privilege which is to protect those who say defamatory statements in circumstances where the common convenience and welfare of society demand such protection. If we compare absolute privilege and qualified privilege we can see that absolute privilege is limited to some defined occasions. On the other hand, qualified privilege applies to the protection of a wider variety of situations whereby it is in the public interest that individuals are able to comment freely on what they honestly believe to be true in their…
In Peggy McIntosh's "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack" one of the first appeals to text I see is logos. We see such techniques in the first few paragraphs were she goes on to use logic to explain that because male privilege obviously exists and because men, while admitting women do have a disadvantage in society, can't see their advantage in being male, then, because of interlocking hierarchies in our society, the same must go for whites when it comes to white privilege. Meanwhile for ethos, she clearly states multiple times that she is indeed white and is able to use her race as a source of credibility for the article. McIntosh uses her experience as a white citizen to list down some of the advantages she has had, or will…
This metaphor works very well explaining each individuals privilege. For example, the people in the front row of the classroom has a better chance at throwing the crumpled paper into the recycle bin while the people in the back row has a smaller chance to make it into the recycle bin. Students in the front row and back row have different privilege because they are born to it.…
The Privilege activity is so impressive to me. Because I have never pay attention to my privilege and think I have any privilege. So, I think I will stand at the back of the line, but I turn out standing at the middle of the line. Some classmates, I think they would stand at the front of me because their first language is English and I think they have better privilege than me, but they actually stand behind me because of social problems like family.…
White privilege is one issue that must be confronted as a precondition to releasing the energy required to successfully challenge institutional racism. It is the collection of benefits based on belonging to a group perceived to be white, when the same or similar benefits are denied to members of other groups. It is the benefit of access to resources and social rewards and the power to shape the norms and values of society that white people receive, unconsciously or consciously, by virtue of their skin color The existence of white privilege in the Canadian society is not a useful tool to the growth of the society because, it encourages racism amongst individuals, makes the aboriginals feel less important and as such promotes hatred amongst others, and it promotes inequality in the society. Therefore Canadian authorities should look out for the equality of its citizens as this is a very good way of making the society a better place.…
