Coursework 2 – Transformer Core at the request of Dr. D.M.Hepburn |

1. Aims & Objectives 2.1. Aim
The first aim of this coursework is to use the skills developed from lab session one to create a transformer model, using software package MagNet. This package allows you to simulate electromagnetic fields and measure the change in flux in the designed model.
The second aim hoping to be achieved during this investigation is to gain a better understanding of the design of transformers and how through variations of materials and dimensions the flux leakage and consequentially the efficiency of the transformer can be affected. 2.2. Objectives
The objectives of the investigation are: 1. To understand the variation in magnitude of the flux leakage in the area between the upper surface of the transformer coils and core. 2. To consider the flux variation an air gap in the centre member of a transformer core.
These objectives will be ascertained by observing the variation in:
(i). Magnitude and direction of the flux across the region between the upper sections of the coil and the lower face of the top level of the core, shown as H-H’ in Figure 1. The data taken at a level which is 5mm below the face of the core.
(ii). Magnitude of the flux through the centre middle member of the core, shown as V-V’ in Figure 1, (Page 5). The data should be taken from 5mm above to 5mm below the faces of the core. (Hepburn, 2012)

Iron- Transformers are used widely in consumer electronic products to step down the supply voltage to a level where it will be suitable for the low voltage circuits they contain. In these kinds of applications the transformer could also act as a key safety component that electrically isolates the end user from direct contact with the extremely dangerous supply…

We usually move electrons to do work, and when we move a lot of them, we create a large magnetic field around the conductor through which the electrons move. The moving electrons are electricity, and if we coil the conductor through which the current is flowing, we can cause the magnetic field around the individual wires to "add up" and make one bigger field. The bigger field "reaches around" the entire coil of wire, and the magnetic lines of force all flow through the center, and then out one end, around the coil in all directions, and then back into the other end. This is where l (L) and N come into play, increasing the length of the wire and the amount of coils means for a stronger EMF just like with changing the Magnetic Field…

The main goal of this project is to design an efficient and cost effective 5 volt DC power supply from 220 volt AC source input. The design is completed using a transformer, full wave bridge rectifier, filter with suitable smoothing capacitor and a voltage regulator. After completing the design simulation is performed for the design. From the simulation it is observed that the output wave shape of the DC voltage is very smooth and the value is almost 5.01 V.…
