According to Hanser (pg. 106) probation is defined as “a control valve mechanism that mitigates the flow of inmates sent directly to the jailhouse.” In other words, it's the release of an inmate that needs continuous supervision and advises proper behavior, that does not commit any further crime. When trying to understand the development of probation and parole, one would first have to look at the history of each. I will begin with the history of probation and continue with the history of parole. I will explain discuss the pros and cons of each and describe how it has progressed over the years.

Rather than sending an offender straight to jail, probation is an alternative rehabilitation system. By giving people another opportunity, it gives a judge more options and makes them consider whether this specific person can become a functioning member of society. These offenders have another chance at redemption and get to prove that they are fit enough to be a member of society; When this happens, they have to retain a good behavior and make progression to not commit future crimes. Although there are advantages of the system, there are also disadvantages.
A simple disadvantage of probation would claim that offenders are just “getting off easy.” Releasing an offender back into a community can become a hazard and can increase the risk possible danger. Sometimes when one is released they aren’t able to reintegrate themselves back into society and continue to make the same mistakes that got them into trouble in the first place. While on parole, supervision of the offender is something that has to happen in order to see if one violates their duties. This is something that typically is a financial burden to the public and a detriment to the individual's liberties.
To reiterate, probation and parole coincide with each other. Probation and parole are both alternatives to incarceration. Probation occurs more often and happens prior, and parole is just an early release.
