Problem Identification and Creativity Applications
Diet as an inseparable part of people’s life not only fulfills humans’ basic biological needs; it also becomes a huge part of the society’s everyday culture. Moreover, it’s an essential aspect of the world’s economy. With a large amount Chinese immigrants moved from China to United States, Chinese foods have been spread to America at the same time. People always said: “if you want to understand a country’s culture, taste its foods.” China, a country that has 5000 years history, has a rich diet culture. Szechwan style food, which includes Kung Pao chicken, Beef with Broccoli, is recognized by Americans as the most popular Chinese food styles. However, Chinese hot pot, which is a Chinese style fondue, has not been recognized by Americans. As an international graduate student, my objective is to open a Chinese hot pot restaurant to not only fulfill my business purpose, but also spread the culture of real Chinese foods.
I used to work as part time in a Chinese restaurant. Every time, when I got calls from ordering, I found most of the Americans would order sesame chicken, orange chicken. The reason that people tended to order these foods was because the way Chinese restaurant cooked these dishes was similar to the American cook style. In the American diet, Fry is a major cooking style. Moreover, when the raw material is chicken, fry and grill are the two most common cooking methods. However, even people who order these dishes think they eat the real Chinese food; the fact is that there is no relationship between those chicken dishes and real Chinese foods. When Chinese foods spread to America, for the purpose for adapting American ritual, people who own Chinese restaurants begin to use American cook styles more often.
