Problem with Stereotyping
In American Culture power is everything. The clothes you wear, the car you drive, and the things you own dictate who you are. But do all of these things really make you who you are? The society that we live in says yes.
I think back to Thanksgiving Break two years ago. I was volunteering at Metropolitan Ministries with a volunteer group that I was a part of. The coordinator was giving out jobs to the various groups that were there and my group was assigned to help people unload groceries into their cars. He pulled us over to the side and said, “Please don’t judge these people on the cars that they are driving because a lot of them are going to be nicer than yours and your parents. These people thought they could afford these cars but a lot of them lost everything and that car is the only thing they own now.” I just didn’t quite understand why someone would put themselves into a financial situation like that. Then I started to think about how our society makes people feel that if they drive a car with the name Mercedes on the back that they are better than everyone else. I used to ask my mom why we didn’t have a Mercedes or a BMW. I mean it only seemed right, she made enough money. She told me that “ Why would I spend an extra twenty-thousand dollars just because it has a nice name on it” she said, “I have a top of the line Honda Accord and for the price I got my Honda I would get a mediocre Mercedes.” These people, they buy these expensive cars to impress people that probably don’t even care about them.
The economy in our country is at one of the lowest points it had ever been at since the Great Depression, simply because people are buying things impulsively and not out of necessity. There is a movie called “The Joneses” and it is about a fake family that is created by a company in order to market things. They are put in a huge house in a very upscale neighborhood and they are supposed to market high end products to their neighbors. When their neighbors see

Our generation is exposed to a lot of high priced products but that does not mean we should feel compelled to own it all. Many people see popular brands as statements, items that say “I am greater that you “and buy product for that reason. Twitchell makes a remarkable point about his father driving a Plymouth: a car not associated with wealth. “Today I wouldn’t go to a doctor that drove a Plymouth. I would figure if she doesn’t drive a Lexus than she is having trouble with her practice”. (322) True in life, this is how we pass judgment today. We live in a world where our competency and morality is determined by whether or not we wear a Rolex or drive a Lexus.…

Stereotyping can change a person’s character uncontrollably. “We were Indian children expected to be stupid. Most lived up to those expectations inside the classroom but subverted them on the outside.” Sherman Alexie is saying that the people he grew up around are what created the stereotype. They didn’t try in the classroom. There was a constant battle between Indians and non-Indians to prove what they were made of, but Indians gave up. They decided to let the rumors about them become true. As they continued on, they believed the rumors were true as well. They believed that the classroom was a vulnerable place where they could never excel. All, within a blink of an eye. Without the kids really being able to stop what was really happening, the stereotype sucked them in and never let…

We all have encountered some type of stereotype or prejudices. A stereotype that I had to face was age prejudice by me being so young sometimes people don't set the high expectations for you that other people would at an older age because they expect for you to make mistakes. At times my mindset isn't where most kids are at my age. I skipped pre k and I am supposed to be in the 8th grade. When I tell people my age they be like " OMG you are young to be the grade that you are in" this is a perfect example of what I am stating that people sometimes think that you have to be average and can't go over and beyond your years.…

What image do you see when you hear the word homeless? I use to think of words like dirty, lonely, and also needy. The true definition of homeless is without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. Stereotyping is a common thought through our human minds, which means oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. I learned this summer on my mission trip to Madison, Wisconsin, that homeless people are not what we think they are.…

Junot Diaz’s “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie” seems to play into and highlight the racial stereotypes that affect the way Americans see each other; however, Diaz is in fact working to show that even people who believe they understand the full extent of stereotypes, especially men, find themselves subordinate to the ones they are stereotyping. In this story, Diaz shows how female stereotypes actually control the actions of a males seeking intimacy. The man will revert to basic instinct and base his decisions on a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person. The short story focuses its instruction on the ultimate goal of reaching physical intimacy with a girl, but illustrates the definitely different courses of action necessary to take depending on what ethnicity the target girl is. This is where Diaz proves that even by mastering the “predicted” behavior of females through racial stereotypes, the male while appearing to have control of the situation is actually lower than the female.…

I can fortunately and happily say that I personally have not experienced unequal treatment in regards to my chosen career, educational path or previously held jobs. What I do still see currently being stereotyped are gender roles and the way they are allowed or not allowed to sexually express themselves in the public eye. From my experience it is more acceptable for men to compose music about sex, be in main stream media selling sex, have successful careers in sex, and everyday unequal expectations in dating, sex and relationships. Men have more sexual freedom in the world today. Men are encouraged and in most cases applauded on the discussion of how many partners they have had in the past and the specifics of each experience, yet woman are still expected to hide their sex from the world in fear of ridicule and isolation.…

Stereotyping and prejudice are not the same thing, but are somewhat linked to one another. Stereotyping is defined as a preconceived or oversimplified generalization about an entire group of people/person without regard for individual differences. Even when stereotypes are positive, they always have a negative impact and can lead to discrimination. Prejudice as defined in our text is an irrational, negative attitude toward a category of people. Now that I have defined the terms I'd like to take you further in depth on the differences between the two.…

A situation I have to face is dealing with being stereotyped. My ethnicity of being Indian causes people to presume that my dialect would have an accent and that I would be a shy personality. They tend infer what my religion might be, expect me to dress completely reserved. They believe that I am a genius especially in mathematics. Before they even try to get to know my personality, they often conclude that they already who I am. Although I do have some attributes to these characteristics, I try to show people who I truly am, because I am more unique than some cliché persona. I would not do anything differently because having to present myself as an individual gets me out of my comfort…

One can argue that excessive materialism only affects those who can afford their expenses. They claim that small groups of people, usually being “the 1%”, have a problem with spending money on items that they don’t require. They figure if they have enough money to support their useless purchases, it should not be a problem. And although this may be true in some cases, such as very wealthy rappers or celebrities in entertainment, the rise of excessive materialism is growing among young teenagers and adults that can’t afford the items they are purchasing. Young teenagers will go to the extent of stealing their own parents’ cash to buy high-end fashion clothes, accessories, games, and anything one can imagine. A story of a young girl named Dee in Champagne Taste, Beer Budget explains an incident where she withdrew $1,600 out of her mother’s saving account she had set up for her just to satisfy her fix of buying materialistic fashion items. Her mother says, “Delia, you’re turning into a lunatic, giving all your hard-earned money to multimillionaires!” (Cleveland 279). And she simply responds, “Mama, you’re behind the times.” I was looking fly, and that was all that mattered.” (Cleveland 279). The amount of people in America that can’t support their purchases outweigh those who can, which is most likely the main reason America is currently 59…

I remember a story of my classmate. She was an international student and about to take a class at our community college. “Are you sure taking this class?” asked the advisor with a suspected voice, “This class requires diligent students and most Asian just like to hang around with their friend and forget their homework”. “Of course, I do,” she answered with a little of anger and then calmed herself down, “I know how hard myself should do.” She was very disappointed and felt like being insulted. That is discrimination. The advisor’s attitude, the way she treated Asian student, is it because of stereotyping? The “The Hollywood Lens on Latinos is Out of Focus” of Rick Najera and “Cops by Day, Targets by Night; Stop-and-frisks Also Happen to NYPD Officers” by Sam Levin have pointed out evidences and their solutions to stereotyping.…

Have you ever judged a book from its cover? Have you ever judged a person by his or her looks or, maybe something you heard about them? If so this is merely a common mistake people make. This is called stereotyping. Usually you have some prior concept on the topic or person. In “About Men” the author, Gretel Ehrlich stresses these simple mistakes that are made when coming up with a judgment of cow boys and their characteristic. The same stereotypes cowboys face as do poets. Poets are sometimes looked at as reclusive and over sensitive and in some case this may be true but not in all cases though.…
