between our thoughts and how we are able to express them. We use language to think, and thinking is the medium between language and thoughts.
My next door neighbors are moving out of their house.
My perception of the situation was that they were moving somewhere with more space to play and store their toys, such as dirt bikes, four wheelers, and motorcycles that they were always using. I thought that they were moving to a house with more space because they had a lot of toys like four wheelers and motorcycles, and had parties and people over constantly. I learned that what was going on was that the man had lost his job, and had been unable to find work so they were being forced to short sale their house for nearly half of what they originally paid for it. There was such a big difference in what was really going on and what I thought because I did not see the smaller things that were happening, only saw what I thought was going on. Language empowered the expression of my thoughts because I was able to communicate my sympathies when I learned what had happened. I was very sad to learn that they were not moving because they wanted to, but because they had to. I was so caught up in my own life being hard that I thought everyone else had it easy. I learned that my thinking was not fair to them because I had used my own perceptions of what their life was like. I learned not to let my own problems in life cloud my judgment of others, and to talk to people about their lives rather than make assumptions that I am the only one with …show more content…
difficulties.
Perceptual blocks that influence my views are thinking in a stereotypical manner where personal wishes and pride take over good sense.
The condition of our health and our level of stress can impact our ideas (Goodpaster, 2007). Personal barriers are having strong emotions attached to a topic. Barriers we have can influence our thought process, and we need to be careful to recognize these so they do not cloud our judgment. Thoughts are what we generate s a result of what we have gained through our perceptions; they can be based on feelings correct or incorrect information. An example of thought being influenced by barriers would be the difference between seeing a parent sitting on a park bench ignoring a child playing in a park and thinking they are a bad parent for not engaging their child, and thinking that they are a great parent for taking a break for themselves by letting their child play at the
park.
Thought is changed and manipulated by personal barriers in many different ways if you stop to think about it. People who have a negative view point in general tend to think that everything will have a negative outcome. If you have personally had money problems, you can think that everything from gas to food to clothing to health care is too expensive, and that other people do not have to worry about money in the way you do. Thoughts can be manipulated by all kinds of experiences we have been through. Personal barriers can be anything that prevents a person from reaching their goals or participating in something. Personal barriers can be broken down or removed if they can be recognized, but it takes effort to change because these are resulting from long standing habits or thought patterns. You can become stuck in a mind frame that is not helpful, and can change the way you think in a negative way unless you recognize it and make an effort to change your thinking.
