What is a process?
A process is continuous series of steps that produces a result. When you write a process analysis paragraph, you explain how to do something or how something works. Therefore, there are two actual processes: directional process and informational process. In both cases process analysis explains the process by breaking it down into a fixed order of detailed steps.
Your process analysis paragraph should: 1- have a title 2- begin with the introduction of the process. (This may include the name, steps and purpose of the process.) 3- focus on a specific process. 4- fulfill a clear purpose. 5- answer the questions, “How do you do the process?” or “What are the steps in the process?” 6- have clear explanations or instructions. 7- be organized step-by-step. 8- label steps clearly with sequence markers such as first, next, then etc. 9- avoid conversational “you” whenever possible.
10- preferably end with a concluding or a summary sentence. (This may include the outcome of the process or summary of the steps.) 11- In order for the process to be completed, the subject of directional process analysis paragraph requires a form of human or machine or animal assistance (e.g. how to make coffee using electric percolator, how to develop an ordinary black and white film, police dog training).
Nevertheless, subjects like ‘how the heart pumps blood to all parts of the body’ may not be suitable for directional analysis since it is a natural process which takes place without the need of directions. 12- Try to use passive voice whenever possible.
Activity 1: Study the following paragraph. Underline the transition words and complete the analysis.
