Profession of Arms
The profession of arms campaign is a designed to refine to the soldiers and the leaders on the understanding of the meaning of professionals and its relation to the army. It also seeks to understand the task of the military and what separates them from other occupation (Grifiths, 2008). The profession of arms in army is composed of experts who are entrusted with application of ethics in the land combat power and they also serve under the authority of civilian and are also trusted with the duty of constitution, interests and rights of the people of United States of America. The campaign will help in understanding military service as more profession than occupation.
For an army to a profession of arms it calls for the responsibility of executing duties and serving the people of the United States of America while upholding the constitution. The aspects of professionalism are instilled through extensive training and preparation. The army should make decisions whether in combat patrol or in their budget consistent with the professional ethic. The professionalization of army has seen a tremendous improvement nature of manifestation and motivations of the soldiers. The army should establish and adapt the ethic that governs their profession. They should also set standards for performance and conduct for its soldiers in order to attain the profession of arms status. The army as a profession of arms is also trusted with the responsibility of defending the people of the United States of America and also upholding the constitution.
A professional soldier in the United States of America is considered to be a volunteer and an expert who is certified by the profession of arms to uphold sacrifice and service as per the constitution and serve the nation. A professional soldier should always adhere to the code of ethics of the profession and have good ethical standards. Development into a professional soldier is gradual and develops while working and living the environment and surrounded by the culture of true and genuine professionalism. It cannot occur in the early stages of the career in the military and thus it requires years of working to develop into one. The soldiers have to be experts who have assumed the character and identity of the profession. The professionalism in soldiers enables them to perform their duties with lots of motivation and inspiration. Consequently, a professional soldier should meet very high standards of profession I.e. character, competence, expertise and morality. This is attained through rigorous training and educating the soldiers on how to serve the nation and the constitution as professionals.
After nine years of war which erupted as from 9/11 we assess the attributes of a professional soldier which are expertise, trust, skill, service, character and leadership and surely we are slowly meeting the aspirations of the profession of arms campaign. Through the attainment of high standards of the above mentioned attributes which has been shown in the military we can really see that we are moving towards attaining the objective of the campaign. Generally after nine years of war our army has been transformed into a profession of arms which is able to commit to a culture of responsibility and service. Finally the behaviors of our army has really developed to that of professional experts and moved from being just an occupation. The campaign for the profession of arms can be said to be so far successful in developing our military from not only been occupation but also a profession. The army should work tirelessly to keep reinforcing itself to be a profession of arms.
