Professional Athletes Research Paper
Athletes have been looked up to as role models for as long as sports have existed. There is so much attraction and admiration about being a professional athlete. Sports can have a great impact on people and society. Professional Athletes should be held as role models for the youth because they are at the center stage of attention in this world. The term role model is defined as a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially the younger generation. Setting good examples and showing personal integrity allows guidance for the youth. Athletes being pressured to win at any cost allow them to feel that they are above the law. Although some professional athletes are held to high standards, they tend to fail …show more content…

Athletes can show great characteristics on the playing field setting great examples for the youth by showing sportsmanship, teamwork, and hard work. Teamwork is displayed in sports such as football, baseball, and basketball. Teamwork is when all players work together and are all striving to reach the same goal. Working together as a team is very beneficial and teaches young children a lot about working together and how it’s never a one-man show. Having Sportsmanship is probably the biggest characteristic an athlete can show by not taunting, helping the other team out, and also congratulating a team on a win. Professional athletes demonstrate their love for the game by playing hard. Athletes that play hard every game can teach kids at a young age to always try there best at anything they do. Children admire certain professional athletes that they see on television so of course imitation is going to occur. It is statistically proven that children who are active in sports are less likely to become involved in drugs because they know the downside of getting hooked on drugs. “The mentality and behavior of drug addicts is wholly irrational until you understand that they are completely powerless over their addiction and unless they have structured help, they have no hope.” (Steinberg 1) Obesity is another growing problem in today’s world and professional athletes promotes better eating habits and staying healthy in order to perform at a higher

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

According to “Youth Sports In America: An Overview” sports are an excellent opportunity for social development. The Article states that, “…many of the social and moral requirements for sports parallel to how individuals must function in a law-abiding society” (7). This statement is true in theory, listening to your coaches and following orders at practice can teach you to follow the law and model how to act with say a supervisor, yet this is all assuming your coach teaches you how with more then an agenda to simply win at all cost. Although sports are thought to teach moral values “Youth Sports In America: An Overview” states this, “Sports themselves are not morel or immoral…however the potential does exist to enhance moral development…”(7). This tells us that sports its self is neutral, the people are in control of practice are the ones who install the morals that come with the…

Richard L. Worsnop offers multiple different points about high school sports and athletes. Concerns about the oppression of young athletes and debating if high school athletics “builds character”, are some of the main issues pointed out. Some coaches believe interscholastic sports competitions teach everything about character and teamwork, while others believe overemphasizing a win can teach the growth of negative character traits. Meanwhile, there are no doubts that certain drugs can enhance an athlete’s performance, but this can lead to injury and other harmful effects. High school athletes are sometimes considered, “dumb jocks”, which leads to the question if student athletes should maintain a certain grade-point average. Some players think…

Should any athlete be judged on what kind of person he or she is on or off the field, court, or swimming pool? The answer is yes, athletes should be punished for actions which occur in their own personal lives. In today’s world, sport stars and other athletes are looked up to by all ages. Everyone loves them. They look great in the eyes of the everyday public. They appear on television; they perform like rock stars, and do this with the entire world watching. But do athletes’ responsibilities affect only his or her performance on the field of play or does it also extend to his personal life as well? There are many who claim that it is wrong for a sophisticated society to force a set of behavior expectations on people who just happen to do extremely well in sports. “I am not a role model” (I’m Not a, par 1). That statement was said by former National Basketball Association (NBA) player Charles Barkeley. Some other players agree with him, in the fact, they do not and don’t expect to be considered role models (I’m Not a, par. 1). But the truth is, whether they like it or not, they are role models to many young fans who watch their every move on and off the field, and models their lives after how their favorite player does. Athletes should be judged on their actions off the field.…

While I encourage most basketball players to go to college and advance their education to the next level, those special individuals whose athletic ability gives them the opportunity to provide for themselves and compete at the highest level should not be denied the opportunity based the current requirement that players must be 19 years old to play for the NBA. High school basketball players should be mature enough to make their own decisions about their career paths, so the NBA shouldn't deny them. Furthermore, other sports have employed teenagers for years with success.…

There has been major discussion recently concerning the topic if college athletes should or shouldn't be paid while they are attending school. The first thing the opposition wants to say is, "They're already getting a scholarship! Isn’t that's more than anybody else? Don't be greedy!" Contrary to what the opposition states, being a college athlete is a full-time job. A typical day for a college athlete is a player must wake up before classes begin to lift or condition around five a.m. Go to their classes until three to four in the afternoon. For the most part, the athlete must attend a mandatory study hall where the athlete can get extra help with their homework or study for an upcoming test. The scholarships that athlete receives only covers the cost of credit hours, living facility, and food which gets old really quick. According to Steve Wulf, “many college athletes come from disadvantage backgrounds,” and scholarship money only covers the bare minimum. While athletes work their rear ends off, the university makes millions and the coach’s gets a six-figure yearly salary. Although people argue college athletes already have a scholarship, these athletes have no choice but to go the extra mile by maintaining high grades and performing at a high level in their sports; so they should be compensated for it.…

The life of an athlete has changed significantly over the years. Their salaries have increased along with their popularity. But possibly the most considerable change has been in the culture. It seems that every day on ESPN we here about another athlete getting in trouble. Society loves to put athletes up on this metaphorical pedestal, but they love even more to watch them fall off. Of course there are athletes that we can look up to as model citizens, but the group’s image as a whole is most definitely suffering. When it comes to athletes, there is a lot more to it than what is seen on the field. Growing up, sports are used to teach lessons of hard work, discipline, and most of all teamwork. These three attributes are useful on and off the field. But what happens when natural talent allows an individual to succeed without developing these attributes? This individual will prosper without ever learning the true meaning of sport. Natural ability can be a curse to most athletes. They take their talent for granted and do not set goals to become better. Natural talent can only take one so far before their lack of hard work, discipline, and teamwork turns into their downfall. The off-the-field life of an athlete is one of partying, spending absurd amounts of money, and run-ins with the law. The development of this lifestyle evidently begins in college and eventually affects most athletes’ professional careers in a way that usually leads to their demise.…

Scholar athletes deserve to be given special treatment because we have to go above and beyond more than the average student. There are times that as a student athlete that you will have to miss class due to road trips. When I was a freshman, I was assigned two papers in one day and they were both due the very next day, because I had to leave for a basketball road trip and we would have been gone the entire week and I would be missing the due date that was assigned for each one of the assignments. My teachers did not accept emailed assignments and only accepted hard copies. Now on that particular day I did not get out of class until twelve, had practice from…

Everyday today's youth are asked what they want to be when they grow up. Some say teachers, firemen, police officers and a large response to that question is a professional athlete. Something that all these professions have in common is that they are all role models to children. Firemen, teachers, police officers have an easy job at doing this; they are after all the people that save children, teach children and protect children. But professional athletes on the other hand have a difficult task assigned to them when it comes to being role models. Professional athletes are not given an option as to be a role model or not. Just because they have a special gift does not make them have to be looked up to. Professional athletes are not good role models because of the things they do off the court, the false identity they put on, and because of the fact that in a lot of instances they are just an image on TV.…
