Empathy is the feeling in your gut when someone cries tears of joy or sadness. Empathy is essential to promote pro-social behavior. A counselor must be able to value and really see what another person is feeling, in turn allowing the counselor to better learn how to motivate and understand the needs of a client. I developed this quality over time when my mother would be upset and I couldn’t understand why sometimes, but I learned to put myself in her shoes and understand where she was coming from when certain things, whether big or small, would upset her. If I am not feeling well, I am not going to think well, and if I am not thinking well, I will not be acting well. Not feeling well can equate to not being able to empathize with the client. Not thinking well can cloud my ability to think critically and effectively, which hurts the client. It is necessary to act well as a counselor because that will showcase my professionalism and is a reflection of the community and company I am working for. I work very hard to keep my self-esteem and positive attitude high at all times. Trying to find the silver lining in each situation is difficult, it is easy to find negative, however not allowing the negative overcome keeps my mindset
